Well, in general, most of us don't have an occasion to re-use our wedding dresses! Mine wasn't traditional and I still never wore it again.

well but here they do wear their saris again, at least the colourful ones, but i think sometimes also the white ones... oh, and when i remember what the wedding dress of my cousin's ex-wife cost, for example, i spent about one percent of that on mine...

Hah! I can imagine. The Indian stores in my neighbourhood sell 3 saris for 15€ -- Paris prices. Of course, I'm sure that they are not beautiful colourful sparkly ones, but still! Rikita, I'm waiting for your next OP "I am really here!" instead of this one...

I have an Indian friend here who occasionally wears a sari for pleasure or for a special occasion --usually she dresses in Western clothes. She has shown us some of her saris and they are silk, so not the kind that cost 3 for 15€. But she also said it's quite common in India to sell them back when you get tired of them.

Ack-shully, Rikita has her very own thread languishing over there in the Indian Subcontinent sub-board: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=india&action=display&thread=4448&page=1I gaze upon it, wistfully. Seriously -- we're really gratified that you can make the time to visit AnyPort, Rikita. I remember your wonderful reporting on South America (in TTR), and know you'll do justice to India. Hope you get some chances to travel around the country.

well maybe i will make a "i am really here" thread at some point... as for travel descriptions, for now i am doing the blog only, but maybe when i am back i do some more. i probably will only travel around kerala and maybe a bit to tamil nadu though, distances seem to get a different meaning here, in the (mountainous) area we are staying in, even fast cars seem to go not more than like 50 or 60 km/h...
my wedding saris are silk, but i must admit that gets quite warm, so i might get a cotton one soon. for now, i just got a punjabi dress... so i did wear that today, and that one is cotton so quite comfortable...

saturday i am invited to another wedding here, so i will have another opportunity to war my wedding sari - which is nice, would have been a shame if my own wedding had been the only occasion on which i wore it... When you wear your wedding garb to someone else's wedding, riki, there is a genuine risk that you will outshine the bride!

The photos on your blog are as magnificent as ever. If you get a moment, it would be fabulous if you could post a few of them on the "Post Cards" or "India" branch for people (like some of our new members) who don't know where to find you on the internet.

well i will only wear the green one though, not the white one. and not as many "ornaments"...
will post photos at some point, but it might still take me a bit...
btw, as the marriage tomorrow is an arranged one (which still most of them here seem to be, and we were asked several times if ours is an arranged marriage or a love marriage), it does make me wonder a bit how the bride is feeling today. it must be quite strange to be marrying someone and go to live with his parents, and spend your life with him, if you aren't in love with him, and i suppose don't know him that well...

But I hear that you grow to love each other, and that your parents and his parents are better able to make this long-term choice for you than you are yourself, when you're young and addled with hormones...

well yeah, it seems it is not a sudden decision but very thought through. and most couples i see here don't seem unhappy. still, i can't imagine your wedding being the happiest moment in your life, because at that moment it must seem really scary.

I think the percentage of functioning arranged marriages is higher than that of love marriages. Certainly seems to be the case here.

yeah well i guess that has to do with what you expect of marriage as well. when you are in love with the person, you probably have a different expectation than when the reason for marrying is mainly to found a family. another thing is of course though how you define functioning... and well yes, it seems to work for people here, so i guess it is okay for them, though it wouldn't work for me. anyway, the bride did look reasonably happy today though. as did the groom. big wedding btw, 900 people.

ah, agnes does not mind curry. she likes some curry flavoured crackers i sometimes buy, and sometimes we get indian take away and the other day we took her to an indian restaurant. she especially liked the pappadam you get before your meal ... wanted to try all the dips, and tried also the green very spicy one before i could stop her. she didn't like that one that much, though ...
