With the death of Claude Chabrol, that just about does it for the New Wave. Well, there's still Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette, but their work has become so marginal in recent years that nobody really sees what they do.
Eric Rohmer died this year, too, and François Truffaut was the first to go, back in 1984.
Another major French director, Alain Corneau, died last week just after the release of his new movie with Kristin Scott Thomas.
It's a good thing there is a lot of new blood making films...

If you google "new wave" today, Chabrol's obituaries dominate the hits. Here is a very informative and enjoyable site: www.newwavefilm.com/ This one is on British New Wave: www.screenonline.org.uk/film/id/445176/It's amazing to think that so many of these movies that still feel cutting-edge are older than people already well into middle-age. And what of any new new wave? This site has an annoying layout, but it's valuable for showcasing movies we might not hear about otherwise: www.newwavefilms.co.uk/
