Has anyone indulged in MAD MEN,the AMC TV series now going into it's 3rd or 4th season? Mr. C. has gotten into it and last week they showed reruns of it. I was very impressed. Excellent writing, good acting, wonderful period clothing and sets (50's and now early 60's). For those not in the know it revolves around a Madison Avenue Advertising Agency and the employees, their public and private lives. Tonight is the season premiere of I forget which season.

I'm not positive if it's out on DVD but I would think so. I checked with Mr. C. and he said they are just going into their 3rd season tonight.I believe it's garnered more Emmys than anything of the last ten years or more.

Wow,I think I'm hooked. Nic,can you possibly enlighten me about the different music that's played after each episode. It's funny because there are alot of things that are coming back to me from that era. I used to babysit for a group of people during the summers in Southampton,NY back in high school who all were in advertising. I remember being so intrigued by them, their upbeat, always on the ball chatter back and forth and the fact that they were so effortlessly glamorous. I would find it tedious now, but at the impressionable age of 14-15, it was pretty heady stuff.

Re: Mad Men, episode 2 of season 3 last night. I know I am hooked now. The writing is truly brilliant and the social topics are so intriguing. Last p.m. touches on the city of N.Y.'s "plans" for Penn Station. Makes me want to delve further into how that all went down. Highly recommended viewing.

Thanks for not putting spoilers about Mad Men. I'm still on Season one -- last night watched episode 8. One thing about the show though, it frequently makes my blood boil. I am well old enough to remember many of those blandly demeaning attitudes, and seeing how women of the generation before mine were treated almost makes me sick to my stomach.

I know exactly what you're referring to. I find the women very savvy given their circumstances. I can't help but think of some women I know who did work in NY at that time. I have some better insight as to what they were up against in that world.

The French media talk about Med Men all the time, but I have not ever seen it yet. I know that I need to track down the cable channel and finally watch it.

Mad Men illustrates that post-war western primary female role thing in an interesting way.

How so, Lola? I frequently find my blood boiling when watching the show, as I well remember the generally demeaning way that women were treated.

I meant primary role = pleasing men. Your blood boils because the show mirrors post war daily life, probably. I'd never seen it shown like that: the constant putting down of working women anyway.
I think it MUST be just a tad exaggerated. My mother's in Draper's wife's generation, was always on the protofeminist side. I'd love her thoughts on how accurate the demeaning is.

Lola, I'm a whole generation older than you and, trust me -- it's not exaggerated. I frequently discuss the show with a friend who is eleven years older, and she corroborates my memories of that time and its attitudes. Really, I'd forgotten -- or repressed -- how vile it really was.

If anyone wants detailed instructions on how to access it online, let me know & I will post them here. Since I came to the show late, I had to catch up to what was current. I have to say, I preferred watching it in arrears, since I didn't have to wait a week between episodes, or months between seasons.

Just this second finished watching the last episode. Absolutely fabulous -- easily one of, if not the best ever. I totally did not recognize that song at the end. It's Roy Orbison, right? What is the song?

Online viewing: tvshack.net/tv/Mad_Men/ (I think most of these are on Megavideo. When you go to full screen on some Megavideos, it opens in another window. Be sure to get rid of the original page, as Megavideo will count both of them against your time used.) Another good source: www.free-tv-video-online.info/internet/mad_men/season_1.html(link is for season one. use search engine on page to be directed to the other seasons) Season one is available on dvd -- don't know about the subsequent seasons.
