Recently I was asked if I had any old cookbooks I had finished with. I was delighted to pass them on because I adore reading recipes and am always acquiring new books OR more recently in years I go for the magazines that have loads of recipes. Now I don't know whether this is the case in UK, USA or Europe in general, but scores of magazine publishers here in S,A have ceased to exist since Covid hit us. You would think it would be just the opposite with everyone at home reading. Well, as the magazine racks are threadbare I resorted to going to the Hospice Shop and picking up real gems for no money at all. My delight this week was finding a really thick BBC GoodFood magazine. It will keep me paging and reading for hours! Just look at the date published....still a treasure

Yes, BBC Good Food is great. Not only good food, but the recipes work well, and as you've pointed out, aren't faddish.

I used to browse 2nd hand book sales which is where I found "Mrs Beeton's Cookery book". Sadly it went astray in a house-move. It was the red covered version...very common and I see one is going for AUD 125 today.

Questa - Try Ebay. I wanted to replace a hard cover Fannie Farmer cookbook earlier this year as it was falling apart. I looked on Amazon and it was $125 - however I picked it up on Ebay for $20.00. (FAnnie Farmer is similar to Mrs Beeton) I hope you luck out. FYI I grew up on Mrs. Beeton.

As you know I dislike cooking, not only the messing around but the thousands of books, articles, TV programs etc. that fill the media. I have one book only...a small wonder. The cover is red and grey with B&W type...
[font color="ed138"The awful cook's book
How do you put it right if you have made a mess of it?"
"You'll find here what not to do in the first place, and what to do if you've done it wrong anyway"[/font8"]
It is by Sonia Allison Inside it is set out with 53 pages of preventing and repairing disasters. No pretty pictures... just hundreds of tips that really work...I know!

Too funny Patrick!
My cookbook collection was spared from the fire/water damaged areas. When boxing them up I was ruthless and separated the ones we use the most. All the pretty coffee table sized ones that we never used were donated to the charity book outlet that benefits the NOLA Symphony. That being said I still have too many.

I have a few cookbooks but rarely use them. If I need inspiration, I type what ingredients I want to use into google, and check out the recipes. Best for me is a French site called Marmiton.

That reminds me that I won a book about Japanese pastries in a raffle at the Chinese supermarket. That is most definitely being donated the next time I go to a drop off point.

When boxing them up I was ruthless and separated the ones we use the most. I've been culling mine. I wouldn't say I've been ruthless, but there are quite a few that soon will not be gathering dust in my house. One of them is a 1996 Rick Bayless in pristine condition. It has good recipes, but his writing and recipe titles put my teeth on edge, so I've never cooked from that book. This is the edition I have. The book is still in print, but now the the dust jacket features Bayless's celeb face taking up most of the cover.

I likely would have culled but was working under a deadline, so I had to be ruthless. I doubt that I will miss any of the ones I donated.
