There are a couple of good selections today ~ I remember reading this book quite a few years ago & enjoying it. Peeking into "Look Inside", the book's wistful yet charming & often amusing tone came through. In reading the blurb I realized that the author wrote another book that I own, but have never been able to read because it turned me off so quickly. At any rate, I didn't own this one, so clicked & bought so that I can enjoy it again: A book by Paul Auster -- that is a thrill! The title of the book seems familiar, but the plot is not ringing a bell. No matter, it's Paul Auster so of course I bought it:

Today is a day of deals -- Two bucks for over 1200 pages of French cooking, and for eleven dollars you can get nine novels by Iris Murdoch. Note that the link will open to a three-volume set by Murdoch, but scroll down that page for the other sets. April is drawing to a close, so click here to see April's deals before they expire.

There has been a month-long spate of pitiful offerings from BookBub, which is where I usually find the books I feature in this thread. Admittedly, there have been some that were probably quite worthy, but since they weren't books I was likely to read, I didn't follow up. All that is to say that it would be excellent if others who pay attention to e-book deals would feature good finds here. Many subjects are completely unrepresented, but could be gratefully received in this thread if posted by people knowledgeable in those subjects. By the same token, those of you buying from digital book sources outside of the United States would be doing a great service by sharing your best finds here, please. For instance, here is what Amazon UK has on offer for kindle books right now: www.amazon.co.uk/s/browse/?ie=UTF8&node=5400977031&ref=dlx_deals_gd_dcl_tlt_1_2d9f1d04_dt_sl6_45Of course anyone can go to that page & look, but it is nice to have individual finds shared here by anyporters, isn't it? At any rate, here are the two books I've chosen to feature today, one of which I bought & one I didn't. I read this book years ago from the library. It was my first Sebastian Faulks & the only one I truly loved ~ I have to admit that I'm not a fan of Marianne Wiggins. Be that as it may, she is critically esteemed and certainly this book garners rave reviews from many readers ~

Many of us are eagerly awaiting the public hearings of the January 6 Committee. Of course many can follow that on television or in local newspapers. For others, who either want more coverage or who live outside the United States. there are short-term introductory offer digital subscriptions to both the New York Times and the Washington Post. You can also google to find free trials. If you are a member of the US military or government you get free digital access to the Washington Post: helpcenter.washingtonpost.com/hc/en-us/articles/115007248227-Start-a-free-subscription-with-a-valid-gov-or-mil-email-addressYou can get The Guardian digitally all the time for free, although it's nice to send them a little appreciation in the form of money from time to time ~ www.theguardian.com/usAnd if you want to avoid the whole thing and plunge into a doorstop of a novel, Edward Rutherfurd always delivers in this category. Right now his book China can be snapped up for $2.99 ~

I'm sure there are others who might be interested, but this seems right up Kimby 's alley. It's brand new -- the publication date is April 19, 2022. Snap it up and have it on a nice portable device for only $1.99. Remember, these offers are time sensitive.

That WOULD HAVE been right up my alley, Bixa, before our national parks became so over-run with tourists that you have to get timed entry permits. Glad we got our national parks exploring done years before the world started loving America’s parks to death.
We are lucky to live in a part of the country that has many places as pretty as national parks with no crowds at all. In fact, just sitting on our deck in the pine forest listening to the birds and babbling brook is enough for me nowadays.

I get it, Kimby. After 2 1/2 years of pouting about no travel, I am still not willing to join the stampede to overrun "destinations", which right now appears to consist mostly of sitting in an airport wondering what will be done about the cancelled flight.

Nope, this is not the novel about Jesus by DH Lawrence, but a Scandinavian noir mystery described as "darkly funny" along with a lot of enthusiastic acclaim. No mystery that 99 cents is a good deal ~

I was quite pleased with my bargain book finder's email today because it finally had some worthy books. The service ( bookbub) allows you to designate areas of interest, which is great. I just wish when there was nothing that fit my designations on a given day, that the service would send me nothing. Lately I've received offers for vampire novels and god help me, cowboy romance. My picks of their picks for today are two novels and two histories. Full disclosure: both novels have been on special before but, even though I guess I should read them, I don't want to. You all of course will have to peruse the reviews & the "look inside" feature & make up your own minds. The histories, however -- both written by Roger Crowley -- I can hardly wait to read. Each is only $1.99 right now.

Here are a couple of three-dollar temptations for today. One is quite obviously an oldie but goodie, and the other was published last year. Note that Amazon says that the Cornwell book is #22 & the most recent in the Sharpe series. It is the most recent, but apparently actually #21.

Two bargains today, one of which is the 17th in a 17 book series. I've never read any of them, so snapped up today's offer at 99¢. I note that the individual ebooks in this series cost $2.99, but you can get four at a time (in what Amazon calls box sets ) for $5.99 ~ Many of you probably remember The Elegance of the Hedgehog, which had quite the international success and sparked a thread on anyport. Here is a slim (121 pages) novel by the same author which takes place in the same apartment building featured in Hedgehog.

An author featured today in my BookBub emailed offerings was Andrew Miller. He is one of the literary writers whose books come up fairly regularly in the one-day specials. I assume publishers do this so that worthy authors might be discovered by more people. At any rate, I bought today's $1.99 special and browsed his other books in digital editions, which led to another purchase for a whole dollar more.

Some of you will be delighted to know this book is on special right now. breeze? I have owned the hardback for many years, I guess since it came out in 1998. This is an updated edition from 2013, but it appears to hold the same anecdotes and close-up look at Mexico as the first edition. Of course it can be used as a cookbook, but serves quite as well as something fascinating to read.

Ooooo, y'all ~ look at this! Diana Kennedy's Oaxaca al Gusto is on sale right now for $1.99. Yes, you read that right, but be aware that I just now stumbled across this deal, so it may not last. If you do acquire the book, a lovely person on Reddit created an invaluable index to it. Tarry not!

Before showing today's selections I want to reiterate that even though I link the books I feature in this thread to Amazon, they are also almost always available through the other vendors offering digital books: Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple, and Google. If you are still resisting the idea of anything other than physical books, I strongly suggest loading one of the free apps so that you can buy and read at least a couple of books on your preferred device. You can't know until you try: justpublishingadvice.com/pick-a-free-ebook-reader-or-ebook-app-for-your-phone/Finally, here's a plug for BookBub, my source for the bargains I feature in this thread: www.bookbub.com/home/overview.phpToday we have one novel and three works of history ~

For all of you looking for a novel to get sunk into, I have a winner for you today. This is entirely different from the author's hit, All the Light We Cannot See, but I found it equally fascinating. It takes place in modern and mostly mundane settings, but the breadth of Doerr's imagination raises the book to the heights.

There is a real treat of history for today. I know I'm not the only person here who has devoured the historical farm series from BBC Two. The wonderful Ruth Goodman was a star in all of them and has written books on everyday life in various eras of history. Here is one of those jewels -- history and entertainment for only $2.99 ~ For those who never saw the series, or who want to re-watch, I believe all of them are available on youtube. Here is the Tudor one:

Unless it was mentioned before, I'd also recommend - You did! You did mention it before & I found the source. Unfortunately, sometime during the eleven years(!) since you posted about it, the video has become null. Maybe you'd like to replace it? Anyway, it was Reply #14 on the very first page of Documentaries, along with some chat continuing on to reply #17. anyportinastorm.proboards.com/post/121894/thread

A real jewel for today -- I read this book, enjoyed it immensely, and have two more of hers waiting to be read. The author's name might ring a bell, as she was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2019 and the Man Booker International prize in 2018: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olga_Tokarczuk

For anyone who appreciates speculative fiction but who has not yet discovered Octavia Butler, here is a wonderful opportunity. I read the first one about thirty-five years ago and pounced on the others as they were released. Having recently re-read the whole series, I can tell you that they stand the test of time.

Lots to seek out... thank you.
I have never really enjoyed listening to books/podcasts but just lately they have been a life saver. I can get myself into a comfortable position and just relax and with the sleep function ...just drift off. I have nothing to recommend in particular , I have listened to books and pod casts from many genre , really just choosing easy listening at the moment.

Thanks for giving us all another reason to consider audio "reading", Lugg. If any of you audio-users have access to deals or outlets for audio material, it would be great if you shared that in this thread. Today's good deal is some of my favorite kind of history -- the kind that shows how a point in history lay the framework for much of what came after. I peeked inside and the writing is engaging and moves right along.
