I don’t listen to audio books, but my youngest daughter does regularly. She downloads them free through our US library system using an app called LIBBY.

Thanks, Htmb. One of the reviews in the audio post above talks about getting audio books through the library, but it gave no details.
Do the ones from the library have to be returned, or once downloaded do they belong to the library patron?

Bixa, I think there may be a time limit, since there’s a copyright on each book that must be adhered to, but I don’t have any other information. I’ll try to remember to ask S and report back. She’s actually told me more in the past, but my brain kind of zones out every time she goes to talk about her audio books from the library.

I can relate! Thanks, and be sure to tell her about Chirp, in case it's of any use to her.

I tried audiobooks a few times, but unfortunately they instantly put me to sleep. I think I started Proust's Rememberance of Things Past at least 10 times but was never able to progress because the words are so calm and peaceful that they always put me to sleep immediately. Perhaps I should try something by Stephen King.
Otherwise, at the moment I have 4 books in progress, which might be a record for me. And I have 3 other books waiting in the wings.

There's a free online audio archive of out-of-copyright works, read by volunteers. librivox.org/I've done some recordings for them myself, but I have to confess I don't actually listen much. I'd also be the first to admit the aesthetic quality of the readings may be a bit variable, but it's an option. My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

I’ve just re registered my Kindle as the account and email address were years out of date and I had been unable to purchase anything for some years. It meant I lost all my existing library but no great loss as I can now start again.

That's an incredible resource, Patrick, & the price is certainly right! I urge anyone with an interest in audio books to take a good look around that site, starting with the "about" section.
Mick, your Kindle account is not tied to your Amazon account? If it is, it seems you should be able to retain the books you had.

It seems to be as when I reregistered all history was lost. Kindle and Amazon seem to be one and the same?

Bixa, the last one is most relevant but I can’t seem to get to the answer. Incidentally when I re-registered it had previously been in Mrs Cactus name so not sure if that changes things.

Hmmm. The name change would seem pertinent. You could try phoning Amazon. They might suggest you change it to a household account so that what was (& technically still is) Mrs. Cactus's digital property would also be yours.

It's been rather a dry season on the cheapo ebook front, but here is a real gem. I bought & read this book last year & was completely absorbed in it. The writing is exceptional and the sense of place and time completely realistic.

Today's bargain pick is a book that I won't be getting because it doesn't appeal to me. That said, there are many David Mitchell fans & this appears to be the first ebook edition of this novel from 2020.

Cheery, many thanks for helping expand the scope of this thread! Here I go again with the digital cookbooks. Today's bargain offer ($1.99) was cooking themed on fairytales. I was surprised to find that this is not an uncommon theme and searched to see what other worthy cookbooks there might be from fantasyland. The three selected to show here all have attractive prices and, from the Look Inside, also have quite worthy recipes & background text.

I find looking at them on my phone is unsatisfying because the screen is too small to show a picture next to a recipe, for instance. And of course one of the pleasures of a cookbook is looking at the pictures. Using a tablet or a laptop can give more of the big, beautiful presentation the publishers intended. After reading this article I am eager to see if my ancient Asus Transformer will still power up. If it does, my stash of e-cookbooks plus a regular bookstand would make it a great kitchen tool.

Well, it's late in the day to be posting daily bargains, but take heart in the fact that sometimes said bargains are available for more than twenty-four hours. From what I saw, this book is solid history related in a sprightly and exceptionally readable way ~ I was quite pleased to see more than one Elvis Cole mystery on special today. If you don't know this detective series yet, you're in for a treat -- mystery, suspense, and often funny to boot. The first book I read in this series wasn't the kickoff one, but I find that did not matter -- each one will stand alone ~

I just bought this book on the premise that one perfect biscuit recipe would be worth two dollars. It's a US book, so I suspect the measurements are not metric. However the author strongly suggests using a scale which measures in grams as well as ounces, so maybe it would work for metric users.

It's late in the day, but here are two selections. Apparently everyone in the world is gaga about this chef, his cookbooks, and his restaurants. That would be everyone but me. Even so, people should have what they want (within reason). And the price on this cookbook is very reasonable indeed -- five bucks on the US site. You can save on the title at the UK site as well, just not as much, probably due to the extra U in the title. Huckle mentioned this book the other day & I see it's still on special

All right, digital readers, we have a nice selection of titles today. Starting off with a novel, one I've had my eye on & whose price plummeted today ~ This is a jewel -- a book for any gardener to read or to dip into and find out the why of certain gardening practices. It promises to be a most enjoyably readable look into the science of gardening ~ The two books above are $1.99 and $2.99, respectively -- the usual bargains featured in this thread. This offer is $11.99, but a dazzling bargain, nonetheless. Do read the reviews before buying, as for people living outside of Mexico, it will not the all-purpose cookbook you might be seeking. As for the lack of an index mentioned in the reviews, a wonderful woman on Reddit has created one. As I go through the choices BookBub offers me every day, I often see books I don't show on this thread, but that might well be of interest to others. As it stands right now, the thread overwhelmingly features my picks, although a few others have pitched in with digital book selections. One of the downsides of my selections is that they are for offers mostly only available in the United States. It would be wonderful if readers of the forum would share worthy digital picks from platforms outside the US. Of course US readers are encouraged to please show us their great ebook bargain finds as well. And speaking of bargains, Amazon has a limited-time deal on non-fiction titles for $4.99 or less (till April 10). I checked with the first book on that page & it is available for the same price at Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and Apple, which seems to be the case with all the books that Amazon offers on short-term discounts. For more, even cheaper non-fiction deals, these are available right now for $1.99.

I'm listening to a 'free' book from the Audible Plus catalogue...The Riven Wyrde Saga 44 hours (3 books in one). It's a very gentle fantasy and I'm quite enjoying it.
Tomorrow the latest Ben Aaronovitch audiobook Amongst Our Weapons is out. I bought the (signed) hardback already and am half way through it..but I absolutely love the way Kobna Holdbrook Smith narates the D.C. Peter Grant Rivers of London books...so I'll give myself a treat (after a reasonable interlude)

Sounds lovely, Cheery! huckle, I'm still getting the not available for purchase notice. I can understand the ebook being available at a certain price for pre-order, but it's very odd that it's carried on Amazon but not presently being sold. Oh well, at least you've made us aware of it & those interested can keep checking back. It's not even available to be put on a wish list!
