Well, poo! That's frustrating, as the link works for me here on the other side of the pond. I shrank the page as much as I could in order to get a screen shot. What you should get with that link will look lie this, with lots of links to different categories in both physical and digital books.

Two choices today on the budget book thread ~ The first I opted not to get, based on the 3-star reviews. However, I well understand the impulse to read an entertaining historical novel in order to get useful facts as a side effect, so here it is. The second book is one I read years ago. Anything about it has long since left my head, but reading Lorrie Moore is always a treat, so I snapped it up to enjoy again.

You all may remember that a few years ago it seemed we were all reading Henning Mankell. This is not one of his Wallander books, but a story set in WWI which features a naval officer. The reviews left me wondering whether or not I'll get it. This book is part of the American literary canon. Almost all of us know the title & the author, whether or not we read it back when.

My son and I went to an audience with Ken Kesey in London many years ago.

That's quite a LARGE item for show & tell! As you all know, what I show in this thread comes from AmazonUS, although the featured books are also available for the same price-of-the-day at the other online US booksellers. I can't swear to this, but I believe they're also available at the same time for a commensurate cad price at Canadian Kobo, etc. I do get frustrated over the fact that an attractive US price for an ebook may not be available in other countries' markets. I also get annoyed with the AmazonUS site because it seems to give precedence to certain authors & certain genres. Because of all that, I was casting around for a more inclusive avenue to nicely priced, quality ebooks and came across this very attractive Kobo site. Click the link, choose your country, & you'll be on your way to some nice book hunting. www.kobo.com/us/en/choose-your-country

Time ~ a subject we can't escape. Is it time to read books referencing time? The first one is for all of us who threw ourselves at it when we were young, but had to throw in the towel. Perhaps our older, wiser selves will learn to appreciate it. Be aware that it's impossible to tell which translator did this kindle edition. I am quite excited at getting this next book at a bargain price, which leads me to some advice giving ~ When you find an ebook you want but for which you're not willing to pay the asking rate at the time, put it in your Kindle books wish list. But don't forget that you have such a list and check back into it on a regular basis. I did that today & found that this book, which was $14.99 when I added it to the list, had dropped to $3.99.

AI is in the news daily right now and also being discussed on anyport, so it was a nice bit of serendipity to find this book on deep discount today. (Sorry, but I checked Amazon Canada, UK, & France, none of which is offering a bargain price on it.)

I have recently discovered BBC sounds app. I may be late to the party but a search on here did not bring up any previous discussions . I knew about it, of course, but just thought it was a music / radio streamer from the BBC . Well it is not ...its much more and it is all free. I went to look at it after reading this article in the guardian www.theguardian.com/books/2023/may/14/listen-up-how-to-access-audiobooks-for-less-or-even-for-freeI think BBC sounds is available to all whatever country you are in . There is a host of stuff from classic books to short drama , pod casts etc etc . I have started this ...not my usual thing but I like the fact that the episodes are short ...perfect at bedtime and the two big pluses for me s ....where it is set and the great narrators for some of the episodes . www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/m001dmqj

I hope others will share similar information. Even though the thread is called Digital Reading & Listening, I think most if not all of my contributions have been about reading. Great to see Listening being given its due!

The last time this book was discounted, I did not buy it, based on reading the first page or so. But it's so highly praised & has won awards, so I figured I'd better snap it up this time. The AmazonUK price is £5.49. Alas, AmazonCanada wants $13.99 cad for it.

Great to see Listening being given its due! Thank you Bixa -- I am more and more drawn to digital listening although I do still love reading a " paper " or " real " book. Several reasons ...but mostly I have learnt that I get far more from listening to a well narrated novel/ story than I do from reading it digitally. It stops the strain on my eyes , particularly when I've been at work. hunched over a computer. I guess it comes down basically to the fact that I am an auditory learner now.

That is most interesting, Lugg! I take it you started listening to books by choice, not necessity? Nice to know there was a beneficial side effect for your eyes as well. I take particular note of your comments because I've always hated being read to. It's comforting to know that I'll be able to change that, should it ever become necessary.

Okay -- I'll send you a list of books that interest me so you can start recording them. The thing is, Mick, it was when I was a child that I knew I didn't like being read to and I determined to learn to read as quickly as possible.

I take it you started listening to books by choice, not necessity? No it was by necessity ... post knee op - sleepless and uncomfortable nights . Audible books/ music/ pod casts etc. was a game changer bringing great comfort . I thought it was just short term but now find it is not.

For those who want to get their teeth into a giant historical novel, this seems an appropriate choice for our times. In the reader reviews, several people mentioned that it helped them to get a grasp on the history of the area. This reference book is available for two bucks ( <-- American idiom) on Amazon US. The US is the place where American is spoken. But those in the UK can snap it up for a paltry £1.59, although I doubt the average Brit has any trouble with Americanisms. Further afield, I found that the ebook is a whopping 37€ in Belgium, but a more manageable 12,54€ in France.

I adored this book when I was a child & read it several times ........... and a couple of times since childhood, as well. You can either pay $1.99 for an kindle/kobo/etc. version or you can get it free from Project Gutenberg. Project Gutenberg has been mentioned before in this thread, but it is worth bringing up again: www.gutenberg.org/Here is the Princess & the Goblin from Project Gutenberg: www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/708And here is the two dollar version ~ www.amazon.com/dp/B08KH5M7F3

Just so you all know, I will probably always feature any William Trevor ebook that's on special. That's because anyone who loves reading, who loves the beauty of the written word, will love William Trevor. I own that book, but have not yet read it. According to some of the reviews, it may not be the best introduction to Trevor. With that in mind, here is the book that introduced me to this sublime writer ~

Has everyone already read Walker Percy? I read both books in this bundle way back in the 70s. Since I remembered how much I liked the author, I looked inside one of the books & was captivated all over again. At this price both are now mine to enjoy all over again.

Hooray ~ this book is on special again. There is now a trend in cookbooks which has the author blabbing on and on and on about his/her personal life, rearing, significant other, etc. instead of talking about food and recipes. That sort of thing can be entertaining and even illuminating when done well, which sadly is too often not the case. But this book gives you back story you'll care about -- it's interesting and informative. Best of all, the author "gets" Mexican food and does not fall into that thing of listing a zillion special ingredients that you're unlikely to find.
