Have I missed it? Has it happened? So little publicity on this one. Of course, with no internet and only 2 TV channels at the lake, we wouldn't know if there was publicity or not...

The whole thing finished today. Civil wedding on Friday, church wedding on Saturday, fireworks on the Med, and then brunch today. The girl did not bolt; it is a done deal. Now she just has to learn French and Italian and produce a male baby as quickly as possible.

Here is the Grimaldi family in Gstaad in 1976. Fashions of that decade spared no one.

The Grimaldis, true soap opera protagonists.
Do they have their own money or does the French population have to give them pocket money?
At least Caroline has finally done well financially.

Well, Albert certainly did not improve with age. I saw a bit of the wedding on the news. The poor woman looked miserable. At least Kate Middleton looked happy at her wedding.

Do they have their own money or does the French population have to give them pocket money? They still get some of their revenue from the casino, but mostly they live off their investments. France pays for defense and the rail infrastructure. However, since tourism to Monaco benefits the entire Côte d'Azur, a new treaty was signed between France and Monaco in 2002 guaranteeing that Monaco will remain independent even if there is no male heir. (By the old treaty, Monaco reverted to France in that case.) Until Albert has a legitimate child, the current heir to the throne is Princess Caroline.

So when we find out if Katherine has produced an heir?

You mean William's wife, the Middleton girl? She's due to squeeze the next one out any minute. Or if you mean Albert's wife Charlene, she produced twins 3 months ago but the rumour mill says she has moved out of the palace. Albert says it's only because of renovation works in the private apartments.

Yes, K2. And I need to know whether I'll be knitting PINK or BLUE booties for the little royal tootsies, with the elongated 2nd toe...

Tell the Scotland is Free! Well Scotland voted and decided to stay part of Great Britton. So the Brits can kiss my Rebel dog.

And now we can wonder about royal births. What will they call the baby? Apparently, the name must be approved by the head of state of the United Kingdom. So I guess that the little girl doesn't have much of a chance of being called Marshmallow Violet.

I saw or heard on some news channel that it would be something like Alice Charlotte.

Or "Diana" if they dare. Would the queen dare to oppose that name?

Do you really think the queen would oppose a name chosen by her grandchildren? Given that Anne's grandchildren are called Savannah and Isla. Mind you, their mother's name is Autumn.

"Violet" IS an old English name, after all, though I doubt the addition of "Marshmallow" would work very well.

British bookmakers are laying odds on Alice or Charlotte. Since royals tend to have more names than mere mortals, I would hope that ONE of her names could be Diana, in honor of her grand mum...

I love the Royals. Only because they are becoming more 'human' and maybe a little less Royal. We adored the fact that Williams seemed such a natural ordinary dad going to see his new daughter. I don't want them to disolve into boring old 'you and me is the same guv' but just become what the fabulous Diana started...a human chain. I hope the baby girl is named Princess Alice Elizabeth of Cambridge.

I think it's interesting that all of the recent chatter on this thread has been from people not actually connected to royalty by nationality. I guess we Canadians, Brits and Australians don't pay much attention.

Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge Is that your preference htmb, or the actual name? I like it.

The actual name.

Oh, I got one name right! Very glad they added Diana. Its at the end of the names but at least its there. I'm not mad about the name Charlotte but on the news it mentioned it was chosen as a linked names to Charles. So Charles & Diana are once again linked forever.

It is always good taste to wear clothes that cost more than many of the locals annual salary when on an official visit.

I think “tone-deaf” may be the term you’re looking for, K2.
Kate employs British designers that execute their designs for her with modesty and, yes, good taste.
One would hope that other parts of the royal couple’s visit to the Caribbean would bring economic or social relief to those countries.
Who wants to see a princess in jeans and a T-shirt at a formal event? Though she was photographed in khakis and a white T-shirt during the daytime visits.

The royals are living in a world that doesn't exist, except for their 1000 member microcosm and the masses of people who have been conditioned to admire such things in order to forget their own poor lives. (This subject fits in Port and Starboard perfectly!)

I fear you are in the minority. At least half the population (even some in countries that are not royal subjects) is pretty fascinated by royalty and its trappings.
I think that the next (current) generation of royals will be concentrating even more firmly on doing good works. To justify their existence if for no other reason!

Being interested did not happen spontaneously. People were manipulated into wanting to emulate the rich and beautiful. This keeps them dumb and happy for some reason when it should have the opposite effect. I presume the chemicals in the jet contrails are partly responsible. It is also important for little girls to want to wear a princess dress rather than a mechanic's overalls.
