You’ve been waiting for ages, Lugg! How’s your other knee? Still happy with results from the surgery? So far its good but the strain of taking the brunt as I protect the other one worries me. I hope in happens soon Lugg and that you are able to out of pain and get some relief. The exercises are critical post op. Once you start getting the routine of doing them it's not so tedious. Me too Casi - thank you . I keep trying with the exercises to keep it as strong as poss pre op.

Still waiting - my knee is now almost completely F&&k£d . Painkillers barely work anymore. Off on my jolly to Greece soon and then when I return I am going to become a right royal pain in the ass and phone my consultant's secretary weekly.
Its so bad that I am going to have to swallow my pride and ask for assistance at the UK airport to get me to/from the gate. I never thought it would get to this point - damn Covid.

Gosh, Lugg. I’m so sorry it’s taking this long for you to get relief. I’m sure it’s hard to ask for assistance, but do what you need to do so you can use your energy elsewhere in Greece.

Oh, Lugg, that is awful and infuriating as well. Even though you'll easily get assistance at the airport, it's just so unfair that it's come to this. Maybe the climate in Greece might be beneficial and you won't be in so much pain there. Fingers crossed for you.

I was thinking the same about how the climate in Greece may give you some relief. Even if it's just a change in your state of mind being in different surroundings and able to relax more.
I was wondering if you are able to swim.
On a recent visit to some friends' fabulous home out in the countryside I took full advantage of their saltwater swimming pool and couldn't believe how much it relieved the arthritis in my right knee.
Here's hoping Lugg...

Really sorry Lugg. That’s a bugger for sure.
I once had knee problems in Greece. We were eating al fresco at a restaurant in Kos when a Greek bee crawled up my trouser leg and stung me on the knee. Fortunately a local pharmacy sorted it out for me.

Thank you all - sorry for venting- I will stop soon but ....
The final buggery of buggers happened today - I had a text asking me, no actually telling me I had an Out Patient appointment for a pre-op in September which I could not make - it turns out that I was booked in for surgery on 1/10/22 . A couple of months ago I had asked and been assured that going on holiday in September was fine, it turns out that is not the case as I have to have at least 4 weeks post flying . The risk of DVTs etc
Anyway on the upside looks like I may be having surgery end of October.

Lugg, does that mean your trip to Greece is off?

Post by bixaorellana on Aug 27, 2022 3:44:38 GMT
I think it means that Lugg could not make the pre-op appt. in September, so can't have the surgery that was booked for October 1st. However, it appears she will be able to have the surgery at the end of October. I'm reading that as yes, she gets to go to Greece in Sept.
Am I correct, Lugg?
What are DVTs?

Deep vein thrombosis?

Yes I am still going Htmb , I briefly considered cancelling but the flights and 50 % of the house is paid for and my sis really needs this holiday so decided to go ahead.
DVT ..deep vein thrombosis. It's already a risk due to the nature of the surgery but i now know that flying increases it. Hence the 4 week wait post flying. I cant find national NHS guidance but can see some individual hospitals have policies re this.

I’m glad you will be able to go on your trip, Lugg. It sounds like you’ve now got the timing all worked out nicely. Interesting about the DVT in relation to flying and surgery.

What HTMB said.
I'm so glad you are able to take that trip so as to be relaxed and ready for this ordeal to be over and done with.

Enjoy it Lugg, just remember the old saying which was originally intended for a different occasion. "Lie back and think of England"

DVTs are an ever-present risk for anyone flying...that is why the airlines have a list of exercises you are encouraged to do every half hour in the seat pocket (that could be better expressed !) s20.postimg.cc/9or2biict/embarassed.pngI ask for an aisle seat and get up and wander down to where there is a bit of room and do some exercises rotating legs, ankle circling, squats if possible. I keep away from the attendants and just smile at any passengers nearby...you meet the nicest people down the back! As well I do the sitting routine every 1/2 hour and drink water +++. You can buy pressure stockings to wear which helps the circulation, just check the tops are not rolling over and constricting circulation. Remember I have a 4 hour flight just to get out of Australian air-space...7 to Bali and 9+ to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok...my usual jumping off bases. There are excellent articles if you just Google 'DVT flying' Remember it is 'possible but not probable'. Have a great time!

So today was step 1 of 3 - telephone consultation re consent where some poor Dr chap had to explain to me all the things that may go wrong.,..I made it easier for him so we were done within 10 minutes. . Step 2 is Friday in person visit for my pre-op - bloods, BP , weight , Xrays , lung function ..blah blah blah - not looking forward to that not least because I have to get there by the crack of dawn which means I have to leave here in the early hours. And alone due to COVID risks etc etc . All being well surgery will be 28th Oct ... I have to say I am more scared this time - probably because I know what is coming but also because it s much more extensive surgery than I had on my right knee . Thank you for listening - I already feel better

How long ago did you have the right knee surgery, Lugg?

Of course, you’re bound to be a bit more anxious this time around because you know what to expect, Lugg. However, I am guessing that you’re also wiser about what you should/should not do to ensure full and proper recovery.

I have to say I am more scared this time - probably because I know what is coming but also because it s much more extensive surgery than I had on my right knee . Hopefully more extensive does not translate into a longer recovery, that is not always the case. My mother had total replacement shoulder surgery, she faired so much better to other friends who have had lesser shoulder surgeries. I am hoping for this result for you Lugg!

Yes, like everyone says, it might not be worse. My brother-in-law in Canada had both knees replaced some years ago. He put off doing the second because he suffered a lot with the first, mostly because of an incompetent physiotherapist (his daughter-in-law's relative). The second time around, he had a good physiotherapist and the recovery was really quick and much less painful.

My left knee has become a harbinger of changing weather, but it has been that was for at least 20 years without getting worse. *fingers crossed*
