I have been hearing on the local radio here in NY about pharmacies having drop off places to properly dispose of all the unused, expired etc. pharmaceutical drugs that people have in their homes. I always wondered what happened to these. I was faced with this dilemna on a smaller scale after my mother passed away. What, how and where to dispose of the small handful of medications that she was on? I know that when my dog passed away, who was diabetic and had bad arthritis,I made sure that I was able to donate what was very costly medication,to an animal shelter. How is this handled in other parts of the world?

In France, we are supposed to take old medicines to the pharmacy so they can dispose of them, but I don't actually know what they do with the stuff.

I know this is a serious topic but on a lighter note if anyone has some "good" drugs they want to dispose of they can send them to me. As a teenager I helped my parents dispose of some "unwanted" drugs I found in the medicine cabinet.

All French pharmacies accepted unneeded drugs. They used to be repackaged in an EU program to send drugs free to needy countries. However, too many countries were providing hopelessly expired or otherwise useless drugs (not France, however), so the program was terminated. Now all of the medicine that you return to the pharmacy is destroyed.

I'm more frivolous than FMT. I got a large charge out of the fact that "Disposing of Drugs" is right above the topic "Dry Toilets, etc." ;D
And now I've got a Van Morrison lyric stuck in my head ........ and immediately drops everything she gots, into the street below.........

Kerouac - I thought by your introductory sentence you were going to link to the Dillinger song Cocaine in my Brain. Love that song. Sorry about the thread hijack casimira. Hopefully someone more thoughtful than I will provide you a serious response.

Our pharmacies dispose of unwanted allopathic drugs. However I've learned to keep mine in storage because it's next to impossible to get the doctor to write out new scripts further down the line and the old ones might come in handy as time goes by. I'm regretting that I threw out all my strong painkillers.
I have asked several friends for their leftover malaria prophylaxis drugs and have collected enough for my next trip. If I go to the Himalayas I'll take extra antibiotics because one meets so many very ill people (locals) who have no access to doctors. I know this might be frowned on by some, but at the same time they could save a life/lives.

No problem FMT!!!! I knew that the title would garner some other atttention so to speak, and was even going to comment as such. The same thought crossed my mind.....
I will hoard certain pharmaceutical drugs such as antibiotics, and some pain killers for the very reason that a situation such as Hurricane Katrina ever arise again when untold numbers of people I know of ran out of certain medications, some more life threatening than others. On the other hand,I cringe when I think of all the pharmaceutical medications that do end up in the water table, after an event like Katrina,or people simply flushing them down the toilet. A cocktail of Prozac and many others thrust upon the population unwittingly, could be humorous,or not.

About water tables full of medicine -- we have a friend who worked as a researcher in biology/phramaceuticals for years. He told us that a huge amount of the antibiotics we take are eliminated in urine. So even if nobody is consciously flushing drugs down the toilet, there are still large amounts going into the sewers.

All this is so scary to me in so many regards. It may in some ways explain all the current disorders manifesting themselves with so much of the younger generation. Ingesting a cornucopia of pharmaceuticals, many of which have not even been around long enough to know their long term effects. Downright frightening.
