Hey ~~ if you're stuck in Folsom Prison, you can educate yourself into getting out! I'm genuinely happy to see that "my" prison made the grade (#13).

I hope prisons are doing everything possible to minimize the recidivism rate and ensure as many of the prisoners they house get some marketable skill or even just a general education rather than just warehousing them and throwing them back on the street better trained in crime. If the people leaving correctional facilities aren't better and more productive people than those going in those facilities aren't doing their job and are wasting the taxpayers' money. Any other way of approaching it is stupid.

Interesting list. My uncle who just recently died did a lot of volunteer work at Number 1 on the list (Racine).
It was very weird when he started doing that. All of a sudden conversations with my straight-laced religous uncle (who was almost a priest) starting including references to his "prison friends".

One of the corporal works of mercy is to visit the imprisoned. Your uncle must have been a very kind man.
