I met him once. He was a nice guy. I was in the kind of event i hate, a caritative event where people pay a huge price to go to and have to be entertained, and where they give money only if they are seen doing so. I was invited last minute for free, just for volume effect. The guy i was next to bought tickets for 500 euros. But everybody knew it. My wife and were and still are contributing 100 a month. And nobody knows it, which suits us fine. But Jojo was nice.

Vicente Fernández died Sunday. He was such an icon here that I was surprised to learn that he was only 81 -- it seemed he had been around forever.

I don't understand why they are calling her Ronnie Spector. She married someone else after being married to Phil Spector, and had her own name before him.

She probably went by that name and kept it because she became the most well known when she was married to him. Her name before meant nothing much to people and she didn't want to change it later to something else unknown by people. That's my theory.

On the news this morning they had to explain it to younger generations as « a song that was used in Dirty Dancing » but I'm sure there are plenty of people who are too young to even catch that reference. (I have never seen Dirty Dancing myself.)

I never did quite get why he so popular. If one were to ask me what my favorite Meatloaf song was, I could not name a one.

I'm the same, but probably for an invalid reason -- since I hated his sobriquet (and his vile appearance), I didn't want to listen to what he did. But reading articles about his death, I can tell that I liked some of his songs, particularly if I didn't know he was singing them.

His "vile" appearance certainly didn't help me gravitate toward listening to him.

casimira ~ back in the 70s, right at the very beginning of his fame, Meat Loaf played Jed's. Albert DuPont ran into him either there or at the Leaf and greeted him by saying, "You must be Meat Ball!" I still laugh. (edited to say that yes about Albert meeting him on Oak St., but I'm not positive he played Jed's. He performed at the CBS convention in New Orleans in 1977-78.)

I don't get this 'vile' appearance thing. What's that about? As for his songs, three or four are good sing a long ones in my car. I have no problem with him.

From Stylecaster.com, Meatloaf essentially predicting his own death:
“So, how did Meat Loaf die? While no official cause of death has been shared, TMZ reported that sources with knowledge of the moments leading up to Meat Loaf’s passing claimed that he was “seriously ill” with COVID-19 before his death. The rock star was reportedly planning to attend a business dinner just days before his death to discuss a show he was working on, titled after his famous single, “I’d Do Anything For Love.” But, according to the insiders, Meat Loaf never made it—the musician had to cancel his dinner as his health was already on the decline.
At the time of writing, it is unclear if Meat Loaf was ever vaccinated against the virus. Meat Loaf’s family have also yet to confirm or deny these claims.
Just months before his death, Meat Loaf opened up about being “scared to death” of COVID—yet he claimed he’d “rather die” than have to deal with quarantine. During an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette published in August 2021, he also labeled face masks a “nuisance.”
“You’re not afraid (of Covid)?” a reporter asked him at the time, to which he replied, “Oh, I’m scared to death! You kidding me? But I’m sorry, I understood stopping life for a little while, but they cannot continue to stop life because of politics. And right now they’re stopping because of politics. And on CNN last night, it finally came out that the masks we’re all wearing are useless. But I’ve known that for six months. They don’t do anything. They don’t stop you from getting Covid.”
Later, when the interview said, “We’re being controlled by everybody,” Meat Loaf replied, “Yeah, I know. But not me. If I die, I die, but I’m not going to be controlled.” “

He was a humble, gentle man, His name was a childhood play on words made from his initials - ML.He came to Oz a few times and charmed all ages by being such a natural friendly guy.He was asked out here to sing at the football grand final. On the day he apparently got stage fright and someone "helped" him medicinally and he went on to do the whole afternoon ...off key. Naturally that made your average Ozzie like him more. He was usually called Mr Ball as a send up. Won an OSCAR for "I won't do that (I would do anything for love) and sold one hundred million records world wide. Had a rough life with more than his share of troubles. Bat out of Hell was his first hit.

I first saw him in the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and he was all over the British tv in the late 70s and 80s. I remember him being interviewed on numerous chat shows and he seemed like a nice chap. I liked some of his music but I don't own any of his albums...

How did I completely miss his long career? I was aware of his existence but couldn’t tell you a single song he did, and also don’t recognize any of his music they’ve been playing since he died. What I’ve heard since he died doesn't make me think I’ve missed much.
BTW, in a taped interview I heard yesterday, he said that he got his nickname as a school boy when he clumsily stepped on the foot of a coach who said “Don’t be a meatloaf” (or something like that) and it stuck.

I bought bat out of hell 2 and i could listen to it on end.
I would do anything is for me absolutely grandiose.
However i often confused him with Ozzie Osbourne, got the feeling they looking alike, big fat ugly guys. And great musicians. Weren't they both in Black Sabbath ?

We both must have been on the same cloud during this era Kimby. Everything you posted is exactly what I was thinking. Good to know I'm not the only one but at the same time feel we really didn't miss out on much.

Frequent visits to Oz...some for concerts, others just pleasure. He showed up in interviews and was not the 'angry' person that you expect when you hear some of his earlier work. "I wont do that" shows his voice is operatic when the song calls for it.He got on well with the 'minders' and they created a crowd when he visited Bondi Beach, he sat on the sand and just chatted to the people around him.
