I'm up watching the lunar eclipse this morning. It's an astonishingly clear and very beautiful sky. Gradually the Moon is disappearing......and it is also the Winter Solstice. The last time the two coincided was 456 years ago apparently - what a completely different world it was then....what a thought! The world turns no matter doesn't it? I find that a sustaining thought. Anyway, Solstice Greetings to you all and may the return of the light bring you good cheer and good luck!

You are so lucky Myrt! We have dazzling bright morning sun as it is already 9.11am but there are also large clouds in the sky. I doubt whether we could see the moon from the Southern hemisphere?

I feel so lucky to have looked at this thread just now -- thank you, Myrt! Funnily enough, I'd just walked outside and was vaguely wondering why it was so dark, since the moon was so full. Now I know! Ran back outside with the binoculars -- magnificent viewing. It does seem special luck to be able to see something that last occurred in 1554. Here's the wikipedia page for that year: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1554

1:37 a.m. central time ~~ just the tiniest sliver of light still showing. The moon is gorgeous -- sort of a peachy color, with all the continents (or whatever they're called) clearly showing in gray.

I've just watched the final few moments as the Moon disappeared over the horizon - the merest orange/brown glimmer....how completely amazing! Isn't it just slightly mindblowing that the last people to see this happen was when the Tudors were on the throne here and the Spanish conquistadores were in full unpleasant mode....wow....
Somewhere in a field (probably), or on a farm a descendant of mine was toiling as the Moon disappeared, feeding stock in the snow....maybe they lit a Solstice candle overnight - maybe that was a luxury undreamed of - who knows? Maybe they had a small feast in the evening, nursed a thick head and were glad the Moon was muted! ;D
I find this much more meaningful than the overblown, self indulgent Christmas season.......
It didn't impress my goats.....they were pleased they got breakfast a little earlier than usual though ;D

Cloudy over Paris, so I didn't get to watch.

It was the subject of the NY Times crossword puzzle this past weekend. It mentioned that it would be visible in N America, so I didn't think about it more than that. We even had a clear night last night.

Wonderful, eloquent words, Myrt.
It's 3:40 in the morning here. The moon is returning, but still with a big dark bite at the bottom. It's beautiful -- truly silvery and looking lit from within.

Funnily enough, I'd just walked outside and was vaguely wondering why it was so dark, since the moon was so full. Now I know! Ran back outside with the binoculars -- magnificent viewing. Interestingly, we had a similar experience when we were in Mexico in 2003 - at Puerto Morelos on the Yucatan, I believe. We had gone out for a moonlit walk on the beach and were puzzled by the red color of the moon. Being on a trip, we hadn't been following news and weather reports, so had no idea that there was to be a full lunar eclipse that night. We figured it out all by ourselves, however, and enjoyed the return of the light from borrowed lounge chairs on the beach...

We have a thread on the board called SKYWATCH,and all this information about celestial events I have been posting in there for almost a year. Why is it that no one seems to refer to it? If it's not relevant then I won't bother anymore. Sorry to be so pissy about this, but,it seems that when other threads are duplicated,we are sometimes reminded of such, and other times not. Arbitrary and capricious,or so it seems...

Casi, dear. Some of us have been regular visitors to SKY WATCH. But now I can't find it. Gone from my list of Bookmarks, and gone from Science Dock. (see below for update) Did you flounce and delete it? Or am I going crazy? But wait, it's still there: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=astronomy&thread=4252&page=5It is in the Astronomy thread, not the science dock, and I was spelling it without the space.... If you are interested in notifications of celestial events, so kindly posted by casimira and others, bookmark that thread, then manage your bookmarks so that you receive emailed or PM'd notifications of new posts in that thread.

I expect it's my fault, this. I have already apologised for not using the SKYWATCH thread but apparently that's not good enough. I have no idea why Casimira has posted such a 'pissy' reaction to my simple appreciation of the lunar eclipse but I think I shall simple now disappear in to the sunset literally - it seems appropriate - I think I've had it with messageboards now - there's always fallout and generally over the silliest things. Life's too short to worry about upsetting someone for not using 'their' thread - I shan't post here again....I can't be bothered with all this crap!

NOOOOOO!!! Don't go, myrt! I don't think you should take casi's bad mood as a personal attack on you. I've very much enjoyed your posts on here, and would be bereft if you left. It is easy on message boards to take things wrong - or to say things in a way that gets taken wrong - and you have to be a little thick-skinned and tolerant to avoid feeling attacked. It happens to all of us, and I'm sorry it's happened to you here. Please don't go.

Please dear Myrt,my pissy reply was in no way directed at you!! I find your posts and replies, overall contributions, most welcome and refreshing. You have in no way pissed me off. It's at how the board is set up and how confusing it can be as Kimby indicated in her above post. And,the moderators "arbritrarily and capriciously" will make a point of making it clear sometimes and other times not. So,please,my apologies to you!! Please don't be offended on my account. And yes, message boards, forums can be a pain in the ass,I know. I have flounced 2 or 3 times from here for similar reasons.

I'm not flouncing! I'm just fed up with MB's and the silly misunderstandings that seem to occur on even the more grown up ones. It's fine. I've always felt that I'm not really up to scratch on here - I'm not well travelled, not an urbanite and not sophisticated at all. It's not a flouncing off but it made me realise that Life's too short for worrying about messageboards - no matter. And don't worry Casi, this daft thing is not really the reason I'm stopping posting. I shall probably still read the board but I have very little to contribute these days anyway! Happy Christmas!

Yes, myrt, hope to see you after the holidays.
