Both DH and I woke up this morning with scratchy throats, headaches and coughs. This means we cannot go visit my mother until we're better. It's unfortunate that we were there yesterday when we were probably highly contagious.
However, can't do anything about that. Today is a rest and relax day, as tomorrow will be. I'm back to work on Tuesday & hope I'll be good enough to work then.

Great way to start the year, joanne! It's all uphill from here. Actually, I still visit the nursing home when I have a cold although I am careful about my contact then. Considering the number of people going in and out of there all day on errands and whatnot, I have always figured that I am not adding to the risk, as it is not at all an antiseptic environment in the first place. If I had a bad case of the flu, I would not go.

Sorry to read that you and your's have a cold Joanne! I myself had the flu. Feeling better today but I had to cancel my New Year's Eve Fest that I had planned for the family. I felt really bad about that. Some of the food I will bring to my in-law's today where I if I am feeling a bit better, I will have a slice of my Birthday cake!
Wishing us all a Healthy 2011 !!!
Cheers! Mich

Thank you very much Casmira, I struggled with some dizziness today, but managed a piece of cake! I feel for your husband and for your worrying of getting the same illness. It is no fun being sick when what you are supposed to be doing is celebrating the New Year!
Wishing your husband a quick recovery and yourself a virus free week!
Keep healthy everyone! Cheers, Mich

Awww, happy belated birthday, Mich!
There is some global thing going around, as far as I can figure. With me and one other person I know, it takes the form of feeling really, really bad for a day or two, then going away. The only problem is, it returns. I've had it on and off for over a month, including Dec. 31 & all day New Year's. Maybe now that we're fully into 2011, it will be a healthy new year.
I will take your wish to heart, Mich ~~ thanks!

Thank you for the Birthday wishes Bix!! As you say, seems this virus does not want to be finished. Felt fine for about a day, then today stiff, tired, headache and upset tummy again. Oh well, it could be a lot worse. Cheers! Mich

Those are exactly my symptoms. The really dramatic flu symptoms are absent, although I'm almost thinking that it would be better to have a dire flu for @3 days, then have it be over with completely.

An epidemic situation has been officially declared in France, and I am slowing being surrounded by sick people or people with sick family members, so my turn should be coming up soon. I normally do not manage to sail through these events unaffected.

Does anybody else always have family problems at Xmas?
We always have one of us really unwell. This year it was my eldest grandsons turn who ended up with 4 days in hospital last week with severe tonsillitis and glandular fever.
Last year my wife could barely move with a dreadful back spasm which caused me to call the emergency services at 3am Christmas morning. They gave her pain killers which were so strong that she spent the holiday period pretty much asleep throughout.
Oh, and I've got tennis elbow which I've had for about 6 weeks now and can't shift.............

Holiday emergencies are a classic.
This year I got to spend all afternoon of Christmas day in the emergency waiting room, because my mother had fallen down at the nursing home. Nothing serious at all, but they have to follow the rules... The very best part, though, was when I went to the desk for the 4th time to enquire about when it would all be finished, at about 18:15. The employee felt the need to double check about the delay because I was very insistent, and returned, mortified, to tell me that my mother had already been sent back to her place in an ambulance 2 hours earlier.

I always feign something wrong with me during Christmas in order to get out of having to do family duties if that counts.... I get real creative. I do legitimately get depressed so I rationalize my deception with that.

I refused to get upset. They were completely overworked, and it was Christmas.
However, all of the nursing home staff were shocked to see me. "We were surprised to see your mother come back alone! We thought that you had some appointment somewhere else."
I just hope they will think to call me on my mobile phone if it ever happens again.

Kerouac, it is generous of you to understand that the hospital workers were probably short staffed and overworked and these things can happen. They may also be used to the fact that no family member is actually there. I am happy she arrived back safe and sound and sad you missed some time with your family, but yes, these things do happen.
Last year, I awoke on Christmas Eve morning with an unusual pain in my right lower abdomen. I started doing some laundry and sat down at the computer to check which side your appendix is on (I somehow could never remember this) and sure enough, the right. Throughout the morning I was feeling more and more peculiar so I went back on line and checked for symptoms and sure enough...
I told my husband it is time to go to the hospital but not until I finish this load of laundry. When I told him why he became anxious to get me there quickly but I was determined to have a shower and finish the laundry. Once completed, off to the hospital we went. By 18:00, I was in the operating room and was released around noon Christmas day.
Now I do not have to remember what side my appendix WAS on.
Cheers, Mich

You are lucky that went so smoothly! I have several friends who work in the healthcare field, and indeed they are always short-staffed that time of year.
I haven't had anything dire at Christmas of late (me or Renzo the cat) but I always feel tired, on the borderline of having a cold, a bit dizzy the other day - and no, I wasn't hung over). In the Northern Hemisphere, it is the darkest time of year, and I think our bodies need sleep and rest. Oh, I did Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, but deliberately didn't attend a lot of parties.
I don't get enough exercise this time of year either - I did ride my bicycle for a few days, because all the snow had melted, but now we have a bit and it is slippery. I do walk every day, and all my errands are on foot, but it isn't really enough exercise.

Kerouac - Am I right in thinking this was your mother's second fall? I hope they have adjusted the hight of her bed by now.
