Hmmm... looks like somebody is going to have a good time.
The photos made me realize how little I know about English architecture. Are there as many regional variations as in France?

Don't know how many there are in France, but I'd expect so. The main periods of Norman, Gothic, Tudor, Elizabethan ........ would have thrown up a lot of similar buildings around the country but the regional variations would've been dependent on the materials locally available. You'd never have had thatched roof buildings in the Lake District nor slate roofed ones in East Anglia. But as to how many variations...?

Well, in France, there are the half timbered houses of Alsace and Normandy, the Flemish baroque buildings of French Flanders, the Haussmannian buildings of Paris, the provençal farms, the Italianesque villas of the French riviera, the chalets of Savoie, the grey stone houses of Brittany, etc.
True that the thatched houses are in Normandy, but I think there are more such things in England than in France (maybe because of WW1 and WW2).

Possibly because France has borders with other countries you'd get more variation closer to them. Even though the majority of British are mongrels I'd expect we'd shy away from most foreign, continental influences in general. Especially French.

I visited Broadstairs on the Kent coast on Sunday. It was a beautiful day for mid October and by the afternoon there were people swimming in the sea. Here's a couple of early morning pictures - Viking Bay - Stone Bay -

Very nice! I've been in Kent once, but not at the seaside . It was a 'Heritage & Gardens' trip, really worthwhile.

We have decided to get off at Ashford International on our journey leaving Paris, and hire a car to enjoy some of the coastline in Kent. Mick's photo of Broadstairs in October filled me with hope as we want to be there end September. When the weather is bad I am at a loss what to do. Can't take cold ocean breezes that blow and blow. Crossing fingers it will be an Indian Summer and perfect weather!

Tod, if you want to see some countryside I did a thread some time ago about Elham where I was brung up. Here anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/6178/elham-kent-england . It is about 15 miles from Ashford on a roundabout way to Canterbury, where the cathedral is worth a visit. The seasidey bits are generally shingle but there are some nice sandy beaches along Romney Marsh, on the way down to Dungeness. The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway is worth a look.

Thanks Mossie - will Google places mentioned. I looked back at your post and see I made a comment. My big Collins Atlas of Great Britain is now going with me to bed so I can trace everything on paper - I absolutely love maps and this old atlas has been to England more than once!

Mossie, I immediately recognised said places on my Atlas of Great Britain page 15. We actually spent our last night at Black Horse Farm near Densole, which is within spitting distance of Elham. Our starting and ending point was Whitfield, wending our way in a complete circle of the British Isles including Scotland. This time however we only have from Monday 25th until 3rd Oct. to fit in a coastal trip from Whitstable to Broadstairs and back to Ashford. Luckily I have been to Canterbury Cathedral with my mum in 2000. We have a plaque on the wall which mentions Norvals Pont South Africa. This Orange River crossing was initiated by my Great Grandfather. So I took mum to see her Grandfathers mention. www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/1613I have been Googling the entire coastline and towns from Whitstable to Broadstairs and have seen some wonderful things. Reason for starting there is that years ago some friends retired there and we hope to surprise them with a flash visit.

I spent a lot, no ALL day on my computer researching the Kent coastline. Luckily it is a public holiday in South Africa so did not go to work. Booked lots of hotels but not finished researching.
