My poor sweet little Jeri (she is actually 19, but still one of my babies!) has Scarlet Fever!!
I was so surprised to hear of this diagnosis! She had strep throat, which is common at this time of year, and she was so busy at College she ignored her illness and now it has manifested into Scarlet Fever. Now our little lady is forced to stay home to let the antibiotics do their job.
My girlfriend Bonnie (Jeri's mom) was also surprised at the diagnosis. You just do not hear anyone getting this any longer. This is to remind us to take care of ourselves and pay attention to your symptoms and seek medical attention when you have a low fever that you cannot get under control. Cheers, Mich

Oh my gosh, Mich. You are so right about not hearing about this disease any longer. Really, I had so forgotten about it that I was surprised to see it as a thread subject.
It seems that when I was a kid, we often heard that some adult or other -- mostly men -- had weak hearts because of having scarlet fever when they were young.
Did Jeri get scarlet fever because she was rundown from strep throat and fatigue? Is it a communicable disease? I hope she is recovering.

Yes, it is contagious. Bonnie and her other daughter have not shown symptoms so far, but I hope other students at the College did not catch this.
Like most students, they get rundown and overworked as she is a full time student and has a part time job to pay for her schooling. Yes, this is how it occured, she let the strep throat continue to long and it developed into Scarlet Fever. She is recovering, but it will take some time. We are also concerned about her heart as it does weaken the heart muscles. I hope she goes for futher investigations on this when she has recovered.
Students are under so much stress. She wants to do so well and she also needs to finance it as her mom is divorced and raised them on her own. They are fortunate to live in a large city where the daughters attend University and College and still live at home with mom, which helps reduce student costs.
Let us remember to look after our selves and pay attention to fevers. Cheers, Mich

So many of the "good old" diseases of the first half of the 20th century seem to be making a new appearance. I guess it is not really all that surprising, because we no longer have any immunity to these diseases, and the GP's have little experience with them as well.

I agree with you Kerouac, there seems to be a resurgence of these ailments. Their GP recognized it immediately, she had the scarlet colored, raspberry textured tongue and the rashes on her torso. We are so thankful she is recovering as it is quite easily cured when antibiotics are administered. Cheers, Mich
