I didn't put this thread in Shipping Out, as it's more about strolling out -- to shop, visit a neighbor, go downtown for the day, etc. Anyway, what kinds of things, besides the obvious, such as shoes and keys, do you think must accompany you when you leave the house? My main thing is kleenex, or in my case, cheap paper napkins. The idea of not being able to blow my nose neatly and discreetly fills me with horror.

I do always have packages of tissues in various pockets, although more often than not, they are distributed to friends who are tissueless.
Ever since I got a small camera, I am very unhappy when I discover that I forgot to put it in my pocket. Yes, I know, everyone here has suffered from my excessive photo.
On the other hand, I am generally relieved when I discover that I have forgotten my mobile phone for the day.

My keys - I don't go anywhere with out them. Living out in the countryside has made more of a Tom Boy then I was before (if that were possible!). My bag usually has all the 'essentials' that I need, which ain't many.

Like K2 I always take my little camera with me when I'm out. I usually take a book too as I spend a lot of time waiting for and sitting on buses....

Rikita, you don't care for lightweight shoulder bags, either? I thought that in India, there was a very simple version, similar to the kind carried by country men here in Mexico.

*tries to figure out how to send Cheery a backstrap loom* This lady is from Santo Tomás Jalieza, although the photos were taken at the Zaachila market. You see women everywhere working on these looms, although turning out very different things, depending on where they're from.

We did a thread like this some time back...I have some recall of HWIPP saying he never left home with out his cigarette lighter.... One of the things my mother always said to me as I was on the way out the dorr under any circumstances, was," Make sure you have kleenex in your pocket, and fix your hair!!!!". So,I always have tissue/kleenex on my person if only for that very reason. These days, keys, mobile phone, pocket camera more times than most, baby aspirin in case of one of the raging headaches I was having,I can chomp on,and lipstick/chapstick,oh,and my eyeglasses which I only need for distance.

no... well the only shoulder bag i do often take is my camera bag, and if i take that one i put money and keys and phone and maybe tissues in that... if i go a bit further, i take my backpack and then i have loads of books with me too, just in case i get abducted by aliens and left on a lonely planet... but for very short leaving of the house, like just going to the kiosk, i might just have my money or whatever i need in my hand or if mr. r. comes iwth me he has to carry all i need...
of course there are occasions where i use shoulderbags, though i prefer backpacks, and i jst about never use handbags... but if it is just to go somewhere close sometimes i don't take anything.

I used to always take a pocket calculator on any foreign trip, but now I have found that I can 'think' in most of the foreign currencies that I use (dollars from U.S., Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong -- Thai baht -- British pound -- etc.) and don't need to convert to understand if something is expensive or cheap.

When heading off to Paris I am always sure to avoid all the advice dished out on the travel forums about not wearing a back pack in Paris (it's rumored to be very dangerous to do this). I make sure I fill it with my most valuable possessions before leaving the house.

Of course it's dangerous; fmt. You must realize that you are supposed to wear it in front, like a koala or kangaroo.

I always make sure I have some ratty plastic bags with me. Not only are they useful for getting rid of disgusting stuff, but I also use crummy bags for carrying expensive cameras in poor neighborhoods.
(Now my camera is so small that I just stick it in my pocket, but when I take my older camera as a backup, it goes in a crummy bag.)

Just read through this thread again and a) I'm curious about where the similar thread might be and b) still curious about what people consider essential &/or potentially useful.
I was also caught by Foreverman's comment about his watch, wondering how many other people wear their watches all the time. What about religious medals, lucky charms or pieces of clothing, etc. -- anyone willing to tell about those things?
Like Kerouac, I also like having extra carry bags with me. The supermarket kind are lightweight, but I also have a clever "disposable fabric" one from Whole Foods that zips into a tidy rectangle, with the zippered part becoming a pocket on the bag when opened.

Another thing I hate being caught without when I am out is sunglasses..............in fact I have a few pairs of 'good ' ones, one pair in my truck, another in my wifes car, a pair in my Lawn Bowls bag and another in the house for when I go for walks

Yes well, in the UK, sunglasses aren't that much of a priority. I always have my phone now, and at a pinch the camera on that will just about serve if I forget to take my own, but I too tend to try to take that with me on anything more than a quick nip to the shop over the road for the morning paper.

I try not to forget to take my "Onya" bag with me in case I need to stop and buy something in a shop. www.onyabags.co.uk/ I have also bought one of their stainless steel bottles and carry it often. It saves so much money not having to buy a bottle of water from the shop! And sometimes my swiss army knife. It's useful for many things. as many of you, I take my wallet and my phone and tissues. I like to take a book unless I know for certain I won't be able to read it.

I often take a book even when experience has shown that I won't touch it for two weeks. (This is due to being on holidays where I run around non stop all day from 8 am to 8 pm. How could I ever imagine that I would still want to read in bed?)

My handbag weighs a ton because of all the 'necessary' stuff I have crammed in. The two types of antihistamines ARE necessary though, as I end up having to take them 2 or 3 times a week at least. I also like having soft picks for removing food between my teeth. Way too many lipsticks (6 or 8 - I like a choice & my lipstick is normally put on in the car while going to work). Tiny notebook with pen for notes & grocery lists. Gum.
When I travel I do pare it down a bit (2 or 3 lipsticks ;D). But mostly I pare by removing chequebooks, phone etc.
I also feel naked if I forget to put my watch on. This doesn't make any sense, particularly at work where I have the time on my computer and my telephone.

I'm at the other end of the spectrum from Joanne when it comes to what I carry in my purse. Truly, I'm mildly horrified by the weight many women are dedicated to lugging around, courting bursitis or a broken foot if they should drop the over-laden thing.
When my purse is fully loaded, it has the aforementioned paper napkins, wallet, coin purse, tiny bottle of hand sanitizer, some kind of chapstick product, glasses, one lipstick, pen, notebook, & camera.
