Thanks for this, Annie. We actually spent a night in a b&b in Exeter-St David on our honeymoon years ago. I had absolutely no memories of the place, although we must have walked around looking for a place to stay.

k, most of the pics were taken early April last year. Yesterday was really bitterly cold and wet. today is sunny and warm.... bjd, The area around St David's train station isn't wonderful. it is mostly student accomodation, with the main campus on top of the hill behind it. it's an area where heavy traffic is allowed on the way into town so it takes about a year for a new building to look old and shabby with lots of black straining its walls from the fumes. I will have to go walk around campus to show you how magnificent it is, though! lucky students!

Really wonderful pictures auntieannie! I love places that seem to step up the hillsides. There is definetly a good mixture of old and new in your photos. It is so clean in Exeter! Very enjoyable thread to view. Cheers! Mich

Annie, I am enjoying this so much! You really make us feel as though we're walking through town with you, admiring the sights and listening to your explanations.
I agree with Kerouac about the main shopping area. Maybe they didn't integrate it into the old style, but it's clean, nicely maintained, and especially -- used. The United States is full of semi-abandoned downtowns. They often have interesting buildings, but are very grim.
Showing my engineering ignorance here ~~ what is that part of the river where you say people kayak? Is it a dam or diversion of the river?
So far, I particularly love the cemetery and the storage cellars, but the whole town is attractive. It also seems pretty bustling.
Thank you so much for this tour, but I'm greedily awaiting more!

the pics of the cemetery were a special for you, bixa... I thought you would enjoy it.
errr... I don't know about that bit of the river by the Mill on the Exe pub. (which is housed in an old mill). I don't know if the river bed lowers naturally or if they made it do this when they created the anti-flood system, which starts a bit further up. on the right handside of the river, if the pub is on the left. or it might have been some trick dating from the mill time? to me it looks like what I call the weir, on the other side of the Quay, where I walked before going towards that bit of the river. are you lost now?

Thank you, sweet Annie!
Not lost -- your explanation makes sense. Actually, weir was my thought, too, but what do I know?
