Great post. Thank you very much. Though I have not spent much time in France, I find it interesting in other parts of Europe I've visited there are scores of small towns and out-of-the-way places that are really interesting and fun to visit, but don't show up in any guidebooks and have only scarce information if any available online.

True enough Andre. As long as people rely exclusively on their guidebooks and travel forums to tell them what to do these places will continue to remain unknown and unvisited. Which means there will continue to be lots of places you and I can go where there will be no crowds of tourists.  |

Wonderful report, as always, Fmt. You did a great job of getting those fort pictures, which as you point out, aren't easy to capture. I'm fascinated by forts, anyway, because of their engineering aspects and the "what do we do with it now?" aspect.
And I know it was covered here and elsewhere, but is there any time when there are bunches of people out and about?

Funny you mention unviewable forts. I was riding by a few near my town that were part of a series built around Paris in the 1840's and they are also unviewable, mostly as they are obscured by modern high rise buildings but also because they are used by the military and police so you can't enter them. At least they've solved the "what do we do with it now" problem.
I'm sure the only time there are bunches of people out and about is once I've left town.

fmt, maybe you could do a trip report at an RER station at 8 am? Preferably on a day when the transport workers are on strike.

I love this report. Thanks for posting the picture of the gargoyles. I've always had a soft spot for them. One of my favorite parts of my first visit to Paris was getting a picture taken of myself by each of the gargoyles up on Notre Dame. I was so thrilled we were able to get so close to at least a few of them. Seeing this post about things outside of the city makes me even more determined to someday venture out into the French countryside and have a look for myself. Bravo!
