Well, at least one parent didn't steal the children from the other. Maybe.

Oh, Rutger Hauer. That's a shame. We have insufficient "bad guys" in the movies.

Oh, thanks for that, Huckle. It is a shame too. I didn't know he was that young, making it even sadder. Just so you know, Blade Runner is probably my favorite movie of all time and Rutger Hauer is fabulous in it. I've never seen the movies you listed, but will look out for them.

Sad that...I remember being terrified of his character in The Hitcher...

D.A. Pennebaker, legendary filmmaker, documentarian passed yesterday. Age 94. His daughter Linley and I grew up together and I have fond memories of him most especially from my "hippie days" hanging out at their house in Sag Harbor, L.I. We saw him as recently as 3 years ago and he was as sprite and funny, and humble and gracious as ever. (He and my husband "hit it off" famously). I have yet to speak with Linley as I am sure she is overwhelmed and a "mess" right now. RIP "Penny".

Jean-Pierre Mocky was the most unclassifiable film director in France. He started his career as an assistant for Visconti and Fellini but quickly started making his own movies -- 60 in all. The screenplay was of little importance to him and it showed. He just picked up the camera and started filming. So a lot of his movies were terrible, but there were so many flashes of genius that all of the top French film stars accepted to work with him no matter what -- Depardieu, Deneuve, Serrault...
He was also totally wacko his entire life. He got married the first time at age 13 due to a pregnancy but he moved from woman to woman and claimed to have fathered 17 children. I am quite certain that in these days of MeToo, he would have been in hot water.

Very sad, but a generation ago, one wouldn't have said that. Sad that he has died, but grateful for the considerable growth in life expectancy.

The worst thing in a case like that is having reached the high point of one's career 50 years earlier.

Well, he was good enough in Ulee’s Gold to be nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe. That was in 1994, I think, so only 25 years ago...

Thanks for finding that perfect obituary, LaGatta. For once, the comments after the article enhance rather than take away.

Oddly enough, I was more affected by the death of Neil Innes at the end of December. He worked with the future Monty Python members back when he was doing the Bonzo Dog Band.

I'll be remembering bits of dialogue all day, damn it! I was too Lagatta. "Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, spam." He was just an amazingly talented man , director, actor, but most of all screenwriter ,author, historian and of course with that surname ....Welsh ! I was listening to a radio programme that was talking about how the youth of today don't appreciate the Monty Pythonesque humour and I so disagreed. My niece is such a fan ( early 20's) as are many of her friends

Yes, of course he was Welsh, and not just of Welsh descent; born there: Colwyn Bay, Denbighshire, Wales.

I didn't think he was still alive when I heard the news.
103 is a long run.
The thing I heard on the news that impressed me the most was how after he had a massive stroke at some point and lost the ability to speak, he persevered and taught himself how to speak again.

Just about all of the reports referred to Kirk Douglas as being the last survivor of the golden age of Hollywood (whatever that was). They seemed to have forgotten Olivia de Havilland, also still alive at age 103. I admit that her Wikipedia page has been updated to point this out.
