Oh really, He was one of the African-American actors I could tolerate on screen.

My favourite movie with him was the British movie To Sir with Love, part of the amazing wave of films that put British cinema on the world map outside of the Commonwealth -- Blow Up, Alfie, Georgy Girl, A Hard Day's Night and the first James Bond films...
Let's not forget that he was not American but Bahamian (although accidentally born in Miami) and was the Bahamian ambassador to Japan in later years.

I really loved Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and can remember the first time I went to see it at the Brittain Theater in Tampa.

Yes indeed, Poitier was Bahamian. You can imagine his significance in a small island nation. I also loved To Sir With Love as a girl.

Portier was also in the Movie of Porgy and Bess. Excellent actor, singer and a trailblazer for a generation of would-be show biz people. I did not like him much as he had an air of arrogance with interviewers and public and put-downs to get a reaction

Mick, I wasn’t looking at it as your mistake. My mistake was assuming it was Hot Lips the TV star. When I realized it was not Loretta Swit, but Sally Kellerman who died, I quoted you since you announced it first.
We really need a new thread for dead TV stars, though. Especially with the big boom in series and streaming.
(Does streaming count as TV viewing?)

And maybe an extra thread for TV stars who have also appeared in movies?

Post by bixaorellana on Feb 25, 2022 17:42:27 GMT
(Does streaming count as TV viewing?) Yes. New threads: dead stage stars who also made movies dead stage stars who were in movies and television dead stage musical stars who also made movies dead stage musical stars who were in movies and television dead marginal stars from the above categories whose careers found new life in commercials dead people only known from television commercials dead movie critics dead television critics ~ OR ~We can continue to consider the "silver screen" to be movies and tv. Almost all of us are old enough to remember when tv was black & white -- silvery even, something HBO acknowledges with its logo.

We had our black and white TV just in time for the coronation in 1953. We hosted all our neighbours.

I LIKE that! I have felt nervous about posting about a TV star’s demise on the Silver Screen obits thread unless I could find an obscure film he or she had acted in.
Now I will share with abandon! And it’s inevitable that there will be a flood of TV actors dying since there are so many shows on so many networks/media companies, and many of them are our age or older. Especially from the old classic TV shows.

It's not like it's a competition Kimby.
I agree with you re Big Chill and Body Heat (where's the AC is always my question?)
I also loved him in the movie The Accidental Tourist where he co-stars with Geena Davis. A brilliant pairing of fine actors.
