Morning....it was very hard work Bixa ;D but Comic Relief 2011 has raised £74,000,000 so far. 60% goes to Africa, 40% to those in need here at home. As the charity teams are very careful hopefully the funds get where they're needed most. This time they're directing a lot of the money at cataract operations, health, supporting and treating families/orphans affected by AIDs, Malaria prevention and treatment...encompasing healthcare, education and nutrition. It's just wrong that in the 21st century people are still starving to death.
In the UK the charity helps carers (children and adults) looking after very ill relatives, young people suffering from mental illness, the elderly, the homeless....etc.
I know it isn't enough money, I know that it can't stop poverty or war...but it might change a few thousand peoples' lives for the better. The comic relief 'show' is on from 7pm to midnight (I went to bed at 11!) and it makes uncomfortable viewing...the comedy bits juxtaposed with reports of shocking and heartbreaking situations that the charity is hoping to help rectify. There is the occasional film of people the charity has helped. It isn't entertainment in the usual sense of the word..and it does sometimes feel that we are using other peoples' tragedy to make us feel good about themselves. However I honestly think that the overwhelming intentions are good. On my own I can't really achieve much, but collectively under the comic relief banner we do much better.
sorry...don't mean to dribble on. My OH thinks it's a waste of time.

Just for the record in Oz, the money goes to research for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Like other places people decorate their shops and workplaces. One year the Oz airline Qantas had the nose of the new 747 painted bright red.
