NOTE: Far too much of the early part of this thread has become outdated. Save time and frustration by going directly to Page Four and scrolling to reply #97, where the comments from 2017 start. Thanks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Split from: Tech+support+and+advice+threads.... I revisited the Otis family farm thread, and found to my horror a photo of two strangers and a car in place of my beautiful bayou-like picture of glass creek. An ImageShack error, I assumed, and went to My Images on ImageShack to re-harvest the link. Guess what? My picture is GONE and in its place is the impostor! I will find and repost the photo, as soon as I can, but for now am maintaining a place holder in the thread. Maybe we can help each other out here by highlighting the pros and cons of the various hosting sites. I have an Image Shack account because it seemed so easy to use when Internet Explorer was my preferred browser. However, with time I found that it was too hard to access stored pictures, the service was often unreliable, and I don't like the necessity of having to set privacy on each individual picture. It's been so long since I've used it, I can't pronounce on any positive innovations it might have now. My current photo host is Photobucket -- photobucket.com/It is certainly not without its flaws and occasional flare-ups of annoying malfunctions. However, overall it is easy to use, to keep private, and to organize your material within it.

I also use photobucket. Its the only site I have used so I can't compare it to others. The only time I have run into a problem is when photobucket censors photos. I posted a photo (elsewhere) that was a somewhat nude picture of the dancer Rudolph Nureyev, taken by Richard Avedon. It was deleted (by photobucket) due to mature content (even though no actual "mature" parts were evident). It wasn't a copyright issue - it was deleted strictly due to the image visual. I would be very perturbed if any of my photos were replaced by some other random pictures.

Cristina, you might want to make your account more private. Photobucket sneakily has it set up so that it's fairly accessible without the users knowing that. It may be that they decided something wasn't appropriate for general consumption.

I opened a Tinypic account on a recommendation here a few months ago. I used it for the pictures of Toulouse and my flowers. I hadn't looked in it for a while but checked yesterday. They seem to have screwed up my albums a bit in that not all the pictures appear in them, but all the photographs are still on the site.

I use and really like flickr.
Limitation is that you can only upload 100mb if you don't have a premium account and there's a max limit as well (but forgotten what it is).
When it's full just open a new account.
I'm also using Imageshack and I don't like it . Haven't had any problems with them but I find the uploaded pix lose quality.

Yeah, I feel as though TinyPic kind of turned on its public. I never liked the way its multiple upload feature worked, but did like its quick access and way of displaying a newly uploaded photo. Apparently it was bought by Photobucket fairly recently. You can no longer create a TinyPic account, being directed to P'bkt instead.
I have a Flickr account for quite a while, but never use it. I should probably learn the ropes over there, as I think they've streamlined things since I joined.

I use Photobucket for almost everything, even though it is not 100% satisfactory. Sometimes I use Image Shack when I am just taking a photo from the web but don't want to use a direct link from the original site.

I started with Pbase.com, which seems to be favored by professional quality photographers (which I am not.) There is an annual fee for basic storage of about $23 USD a year. One of the great advantages of Pbase are the various prefab templates available, and if you understand CSS and HTML, you can load our own backgrounds and templates. Waaaay beyond me! Another great advantage is nesting albums. For example, I might have an album called "Our Trip To Spain" Inside that are various regional sub-albums, such as Madrid-Toledo, Burgos, Cantabria-Asturias, etc. www.pbase.com/panos/trip_to_spainThe bad part is that it's quite challenging to use, and for Mac users, at least, there is no upload app such as for Flickr and for Picasa Web. It's all done through a browser interface. Moving photos around is a real PITA and there are occasional outages. The slide show feature is clunky. The administrator owners are notoriously inaccessible, but fortunately, there's a strong user forum to lend support. A few years ago, I switched to Picasa Web for its ease of use. Moving and retitling pics is a breeze. There are various apps to support it; the simplest being the Picasa Web uploader for Mac, and later, the far more complex Picasa app, with limited but quick editing features and tagging (which I don't do) and face recognition (neither), but the file organization system can be baffling until you get accustomed to it. Then it's only confusing. (The latter applies to the Picasa app, not the Web site.) picasaweb.google.com/doncuevasYou can also upload pics from the web interface, but why would you want to do that? Disadvantages of Picasa Web Albums (the site) are a flat album view, no nesting albums, and although it's free, there's a fee after so much storage is filled. I think it's worth it. The slide show and magnification features are good. Now, if you have Google Gears plug-in installed (??), you can use the web site Picnik editor. I've barely done more than resize some photos already in an online album, so I can't speak authoritatively on how it works and feels. On our connection, the Picnik interface takes up to a minute to load.

Wow, that's a wonderfully complete review, Don Cuevas -- thanks. This certainly makes me want to look at Picasa again. Looking at the way your public gallery displays is a great argument for Picasa, as it's easy access for what you want people to see with no accidental ingress to anything else you have stored on Picasa. I had to look up Google Gears, and reported on it here at #117.

Excellent review, Don Cuevas. I don’t understand some (much?) of it, but can work with my computer wiz friend to check it all out. At this time, my needs are simple (usually post the odd photos on the Port) and I use Photobucket. It seems to work well for me at this level.

Imageshack has changed their policy so that you can have all the pictures you upload be private if you wish. You can individually unclick any you want to be public. Or have them all be public and mark private those you wish. This change happened some time ago.
I now have about 500 pictures on Imageshack and it's getting hard to find things. I never used any folders, and I fear if I start arranging things, little red x's will show up in place of pictures I have posted on the forums, so I just keep adding them to the top of the pile.
I'm intrigued by hwinpp's comment about loss of image quality over time. Is this even possible?

Because of the recent shutdown of TinyPic, I looked around for other hosting sites. Here are two. I know nothing about LunaPic, but it looks as though it might have some useful features. Has anyone used it? Imgur comes recommended by various tech sites. (wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imgur) I have not tried it, but it's home page is impressively designed, with no advertising.

The reason for this Basics sub-board is that so many conversations, hints, etc. about pictures are scattered around the forum. However, I did find the solution to the recent problem encountered here with posting Picasa pictures. Copied & pasted from another thread: THE PICASA PROBLEMWe checked this out with our host Support board. Here's the answer: The issue here is that images are being linked to a secure server (https), if you remove the s from the https on linked images, they should display fine And that works! I tested it from my Picasa account. Below is how the link as supplied by Picasa looks. The red slash is pointing to the offending s. /https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_h2aFIb2Y2Vs/Sn8d-PSJXFI/AAAAAAAAASk/U6jlgDASxSM/ginger%20at%20gate%20cropped.jpg Here is the same link with that s after http removed: no shttp://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_h2aFIb2Y2Vs/Sn8d-PSJXFI/AAAAAAAAASk/U6jlgDASxSM/ginger%20at%20gate%20cropped.jpg Stick on the image tags and: Look at that ~~ a visible image that was hosted on PIcasa!

Really?! I have noticed that pictures that I thought looked pretty good when I posted them here later look either darker or more blurred.
The real reason I use Photobucket is because of its bulk uploader. I have stashed some alternative sites to check out and will report on them here.
I was one of the people who was affected by P'bkt's recent 48+ hour glitch.

Okay, I have been trying out and rejecting one photo hosting site after another. It's extremely annoying that one has to sign up with so many of them to get details on how they work. I found one that seems to fit the bill in many ways: www.galleryhosted.comIt's very simple to use and apparently you can load up to 300(!) photos at one time. It advertises "Unlimited Storage & Lifetime Storage... For Free !" I signed up and tested it. It couldn't be easier -- Click on Browse & select the picture or folder of pictures from your computer. Highlight the pictures if in list mode, or Ctrl+click if in thumbnail mode. Click on Upload Your Images and it's off and running. Picture quality seems fine. The one big disappointment is in how the urls display. Every one I tried to use here either rendered nothing or displayed the thumbnail size. I had to open the full-sized picture, right-click on it, & get the image info I needed that way. To get the image info, open the full-sized image, right-click on it, then click on "Copy Image Location". You can then go to an AnyPort message box and use Edit > Paste or Ctrl+V and the url will be pasted in. Highlight, add image tags, and you're done. Still, I'm posting it here in case others want to try it and perhaps find the trick to easy extraction & posting of urls to the forum.

Since Photobucket recently inaugurated unlimited storage for everyone, I imagine it will be getting much more use and will become even slower.
I find their format very clunky, but like many people, have used it for the bulk uploader.
It would be great to hear from people who have found a new host or who want to tell why they're satisfied with the one they use.
GalleryHosted (#15) gets an A for easy loading, but a C- or D on ease of sharing.

I've been using GalleryHosted more and more. If there is a way to add to an album created there, I haven't found it yet. This is a drawback. However, once you upload & "Go to Gallery", it's easy to open the full-sized photos to get their urls. Please note that I modified Reply #15 above to clarify copying urls from GalleryHosted.

All you people who switch from one photo uploading site to another, how do you know on which site you've stored particular images? Or do you move them all from one to the next? Or do you use the link only once and forget about it after that?

Well, I just tried a new photo host & I'm quite pleased with the results. I uploaded nine pictures. It took @6 minutes & I thought the uploads were extremely crisp & true to the originals.
It's quite easy to upload multiple pics by simply holding Ctrl & clicking on your selections. It does not provide a link already wrapped in [/img] image tags, but it does display your pictures nicely & it's pretty easy to copy the link. Just be very sure that you mark your galleries "private". www.megapix.com/[/s]Megapix is out of business: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaupload

I use Photobucket and have done for years. Although I have my albums as 'private' I realise that once photos are on the web they're 'out there' and I no longer have control. It could be seen as a downside to sharing I suppose, you get the pleasure of showing your photographs but at the same time lose the exclusive rights..I know that some people manage this by printing the word 'copyrite<name>' on them but I don't know how useful that is legally... I got around this by 'moving' or deleting pics on PB once the threads they were involved with were no longer current. This might seem mean spirited ;D but as some of the images were of paintings that I had done that I really didn't want to just leave on there I felt justified...

I got along fine with Imageshack till they sent me this: You have 971 photos stored. Since you're over the 500 photo limit you'll need to upgrade to a Premium account or you'll only be able to keep 500 of your recent photos. Older photos will expire on the 1st of March.
Now what?

I didn't know that about Imageshack. What a pain! And how sucko is it that they let you almost double the limit before warning you about it?! Are you going to go through all 971, deleting everything you don't think is crucial, then start using another hosting site? I used free Photobucket for ages. However one of my threads here got a bunch of views, which went over one of P'bkts's limits that I didn't even know about. (actually, Kerouac had it happen to him way back with his first fashion thread, but somehow the fact didn't penetrate with me) I decided to get the premium version of Photobucket, with the savings involved by contracting for more than one year at a time. I suppose now I'm locked in. I must say, the premium Pbucket gives better resolution. (aside: how come pics uploaded to facebook look so much better than anything hosted & posted anywhere else?)

Their policy seems to be that if you exceed 500 uploads, the excess images will be deleted on the first of the following month. I know for a fact that I have not uploaded 471 images this month! If they have changed their policy, they didn't do a good job of notifying me. If I hadn't loaded ANY photos this month, I might not have even SEEN their warning message! Since I can't delete 471 images without having all my photo thread postings on Any Port collapse, and some of my favorite threads (like the Otis Family Farm) consist of some of the earliest images I uploaded, I can't let them just dump the oldest 471 pictures. They want $2 a month for the Premium service, and I don't see any way around signing up. Under protest. I have sent them an indignant email, but don't expect much in the way of results. Maybe I'll take up a collection on here: anyone want to donate to the Kimby photo benefit fund?

I bit the bullet and signed up for Premium service. From now on, they will debit my bank account every 3 months for the privilege of keeping all my photos and links live on their site. Other than this, I am pretty happy with Imageshack, though I must admit I haven't used any of the other photo-hosting sites.
