I am currently using Flickr. Yes, there are more steps than I like to capture the url* for use here, but it has other advantages.
Hope others will weigh in with their current photo-hosts, including tips, etc.
*I will come back later & go through the process or using Flickr.

I use photobucket. I find it fairly easy and straightforward, but I never do any photo editing on it (shrinking image size or cropping) because I prefer to do that on my laptop. It's really easy to get the url.

To capture urls from Flickr for use here: You'll need to have or make a Flickr account. It's owned by Yahoo & I believe they now require you to have/create a Yahoo account to use Flickr. Once you have pictures uploaded, follow this procedure: 1. Open the selected picture. 2. On the far bottom right of the opened picture page is a little white arrow with a line under it. Click on it. 3. A menu will pop up with several options. You want the last one: "View all sizes". 4. You'll get a new page with size options. 5. After you click on the desired size, right-click on the picture & choose "copy image location". 6. Paste that url in the image box doo-hickey here on anyport. (And yes, it is a pain in the aperture.)

Received an email purporting to be from ImageShack this morning. The email address looked authentic, but still I wonder if it is spam or phishing. Googling pulls up no new warnings. Anyone else get this msg: "ACCOUNT INFORMATION It is crazy how quickly the time goes! Coincidentally - or not -, I also got an email from PayPal saying that my scheduled payment to ImageShack -the ONLY thing I use PayPal for - had failed due to lack of a linked credit card for backup to the checking account PayPal draws from. Visiting PayPals site I can see that credit card info that I updated in February is still there. What gives?
BTW I did not click any links in either email, but went directly to their sites and logged in. I had to reset my PayPall password to log in, and then when I tried to log in a second time, the new password was not accepted.
Arrrgh!

I got the same message from ImageShack a couple of months ago but have not decided to cough up any more money yet. PhotoBucket keeps telling me that I have used up more than 91% of my space and should also give them some money, but I know that I still have a couple hundred photos margin with them. When I have reached my limit, I will compare the rates of ImageShack and PhotoBucket and pay one of them.
Since as you know, I have uploaded relatively huge amounts of photos, I have paid both of them in the past for a pro account. But it is always a shock for casual users to be told that they must now pay for something that has been free up until now.
I know that I could use some other photo hosting sites free of charge for awhile, but I prefer to stick with the ones that I know, and when I divide the fee they are asking over the months of a year, it is not really all that much.

I fumbled through Pbucket for my first couple of reports, then tried using the edit option. Tried Flikr and Imageshack when PB was offline, but I had troubles and it took too long. Now back with the Bucket but have used 23% and still for free. I only use it for here.

So I don't know if it has anything to do with ImageShacks decision to cancel me, they certainly didn't give it as a reason, but PayPal apparently didn't pay my ImageShack bill out of my checking account - $6 every three months - because the credit card I linked to PayPal way back in February was already linked to Mr. Kimby's PayPal account, and each account has to have a unique credit card backing it up. Why they didn't post this info on their Add A Credit Card page, or let me know sooner, I can't imagine. So by the time I figured that out and linked a different credit card, two sttempted billings by ImageShack had both failed to be paid. And now his morning I got a message from imageShack that my subscription is cancelled. And one from PayPal that my automatic payments to ImageShack would no longer be made. Arrgh! So just to test the links on ImageShack, can you see this? imageshack.com/a/img594/6694/1001512y.jpg

Yes, but it is on the huge default setting for Image Shack, so reduced here by 72%.
Some of my Image Shack photos here are stuck in that format as well.

I've only ever used Photobucket, a few years ago I had a message from them saying that I had unrestricted free use of the site but as I have gradually added more and more they've started saying that my account is almost full...so it isn't as unrestricted as I thought it was! I've had to delete whole swathes of early garden photos in an attempt to free up some space, so some of the images posted on here in the past have been removed. Apologies (but I am not paying for more!)

Well, since I have posted so much, I have had to pay, but I just compared it to the price to so many other things that I waste money on, so it made it seem cheaper.

I didn't mind paying, but they made it too difficult to pay. Now that my account has eclipsed into unpaid status, I'm looking for a NEW photo hosting site for future photo posting on Any Port. What are anybody's current favorite sites?

I've been told by a member of another site that deleting a percentage of images will make no difference to the percentage I have left as it's calculated as a cummulative amount....so won't diminish if I delete images. So, like Kimby, I'll just have to look for another hosting site. I've also been told that I can set up another photobucket acount as long as I use a different email adress.

Sorry about replying here so late, but the last four messages were posted on a day of full travel for me & I never saw them.
Anyway ~ I have been badly burnt by hosting sites in the process of trying to find one for anyport that was all things to all people. Some of the ones I used in that quest have abruptly ceased to exist, taking my hosted pictures with them. Moral of that story, I guess, is stick with the established brands.
I don't like Photobucket with its tiny thumbnails, warnings about space used, and capricious changing of its methods. I long ago abandoned ImageShack because of its lack of organization. There are other hosts that many people like but which I always found too fiddly, such as Picasa. If anyone here would like to do tutorials on those sites, it would be appreciated & those instructions would be added to the recently updated "How to post pictures" in Port Authority. I have retired from the trying out hosting sites game.
After the negative remarks made about P'bucket & ImageShack, I have to admit I use Flickr, which has some big annoyances of its own, including that method-changing thing. However, it does present your pictures in gorgeous resolution and gives you tons of space. At the moment I have 5,083 pictures hosted there and Flickr informs me that I have only used 1.5% of the free terabyte they give all their users. One big caveat: Flickr is owned by Yahoo which loves to fiddle with stuff that works and screw it up. When I last checked, you had to have a Yahoo account in order to have a Flickr account. At that time Yahoo was also requiring a mobile phone number in order to open a Yahoo account, which I find outrageous. If you already have a Yahoo account or if you don't mind giving out your phone number, this won't be a problem.
At any rate, if you'll look at the amended How to post pictures thread, you can see the Flickr process. It will strike you as too elaborate -- because it is -- but I've developed a method of somewhat streamlining it which I'll be glad to share.
Hope this helps.

I registered at postimage & am deeply underwhelmed. For one thing, you're asked if your picture is "family safe" or "adult content", which tells me there are no privacy settings. For another, no bulk uploader. Also: Darn. Just used postimage.org for 1st time in The Bear Trail anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/3462/bear-trail?page=4#post-232748When signing up the "terms" were stunningly brief, and said NOTHING about deleteing images "after 6 months if not viewed". In THEIR site,or I forums you posted their links to. Not acceptable to have photos deleted. Still looking for my new (free) photo home....

Kimby, as a general rule I will not use the free sites that openly offer to let you host "adult" content. So far, those have been the ones that got shut down -- I assume for pornography. If you are using a mobile device, I believe Htmb has streamlined a method to use Flickr. I use Flickr (see #64), but her method might be better.

Ha ha, Kimby ~ I just opened an email & thought of you. Imgur sent me this: I only use Imgur when I quickly want to upload one or two images, so have never played with its settings. Still, it was nice to be remembered & when I uploaded that image just now, I got an overlay pop-up that says "It's your cake day!" Here is the link again, if you want to check it out: imgur.com/

This is a very informative thread. I have to set up an online photo archive for our ladies club. My own pictures are on Photobucket but, as bixa, I don't like the tiny thumbnails. The site is slow, too. I signed up to Flickr and I must say I'm really, really pleased with the quality of the pictures. Plus the fact that you get 1 TB (= 1.000 GB!!!) of storage space per account. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

That's great, Amboseli! Let me know if you need any help in maneuvering around Flickr -- it's not that great on easy, clear directions. I agree that they show our pictures in gorgeous resolution.
If you are making a photo archive for the ladies club, you may want to make it private. When you upload pictures, you are given options as to how private you want to make those pictures. Since I frequently upload a big bunch at at time in order to put them in a thread, I put them into a Flickr album at the same time & choose that only I can see them. That means they don't show up on my photostream, but the photos will be visible when I post them on anyport. Also, you can get links for private albums or photos to share at your discretion.

Thanks, bixa. I have made a few trial albums and set them on 'public'. I understand that, when I change it to 'friends only', I have to mail the link to the ladies club everytime I make a new album. Is that right?

That is correct, Amboseli. One nice thing, though, is that you are able to caption and to put in a description for each picture.
