Indeed. Bonsai actually means tray planting. A very odd thing to say in battle.

Here's a couple of examples from the book, beautifully held by Mrs Cactus who I edited out. The one with fruits is 7" tall, the Spruce is 33" tall.

They are beautiful things and fitting to the Japanese who have skills most have never thought of (me thinking actually of woodworking skills).

That could only have been more beautiful with Mrs. Cactus in the picture. When I first moved into this house, my landlord gave me an ahuehuete/Taxodium mucronatum ( anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/7343/lotsa-pots-big-tree). I tried to turn it down, pointing out that my entire planting space is just a patio, and also that the ahuehuete is one of the biggest trees in the world. He persisted, insisting that it was a bonsai. I have potted it up through the years and was devastated when the cutter ants got it two years in a row, something which it struggled to come back from. It's still a darling little thing, only @ a meter tall, so I guess it could be considered a bonsai. When you visit, you can take it out of the pot & do all that fancy pruning to turn it into a proper tray planting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banzai_charge

Mrs Cactus was in her night attire and I didn't want to frighten anybody that early in the morning.
When I visit I'll do some work on your Taxodium. They are indeed big buggers.

The last traditional bonsai scissor maker left in Japan. Maybe we could club together and get Mick a pair -

Not showing up for me. (But by invading the 'edit' feature I saw that it is supposed to be there.)
Ah... and now it suddenly showed up.

That was in my old garden. I lost the original one which dried up when I was on holiday. The Pelargoniums are gone but I still have the Ficus. Yes, this is a new one.

It's that day in France. It's on sale on every street corner. I can see about 8 vendors out my window. (It's the only day of the year when anybody can sell it.) Not considered a bonsai, though, just lily of the valley ("muguet").

I moved into a house in 1967. Previous owner had left a Ficus we call umbrella tree in a 30cm pot in the carport. Over the years it went through looking good to I think it's dead cycles but I didn't have the heart to chuck it out. but when I moved to my last place (1999)my neighbour said that although it was a stick in a pot with 2 bleak leaves we could try.
Re-potted and cut the single trunk back. It was over 20years now and to my surprise it grew madly. leaves from many of branches have to be removed each month. However the main reason for its beauty is the thick trunk which is splitting the bark open and it is like rivulets of different colour and texture being pushed out of its core.It is about waist high to me...I guess a re-pot is due.

Thanks Bixa, It is in a deep blue, ceramic pot...sort of onion bulb shaped with the bowl sliced across on top. The tree gets no special treatment, just a few slow acting fertiliser pellets a couple of times a year...and I talk to it saying how it looks like a mini-Ent with all the gnarly bark.
I really must learn how to post pictures again.

Whenever my landlords try to give me plant that I'm rejecting because it's too big for my patio, the landlord always claims that keeping it in a too-small pot means it's a bonsai, which are always desirable. Does that answer your question?

Does that answer your question? I’ll take that as a no.. Mind you, I didn’t photo it from it’s best angle.

Best angle or not, it's beautiful. I don't think I've ever had a variegated one. For whatever reason, I have an excess of the regular ones.
