I had posted this back on the "wood" thread some time ago. I also saw another good stump there by deyana that I hope that she will copy here when she is finished traipsing around Old Blighty.

Super idea, Imec, plus such beautiful and woodsily mysterious examples. This is going to be a good challenge.

Do they have to be sawed off, or can they be like this?

Why thank you bixa. I love stumbling on these old stumps whilst hiking at elevation.

Beautiful colors in that Mick -- I can feel the dampness.
Kimby, second to the last one of yours is strange & magical.

I am going to ask if the Bois de Vincennes can donate that stump to Kew Gardens.

This is from a tree we just cut down for next year's firewood. It was killed by bark beetles which introduce a fungus called "blue stain" that clogs the pores of the tree and cuts off its water supply. We lost 5 trees to the beetles/fungus in the past year, so our woodpile is growing.

I am wondering what the difference is between the dark and the light areas on the wood.

I thought I explained it above, K2. Unless you mean the dark and light growth rings, you would be asking about the blue stain fungus that is introduced by bark beetles, and spreads through the tree's plumbing, so to speak, clogging it up and killing it.

Okay, I just didn't see anything blue.

Blue-gray is more accurate.

If it weren't wood, it looks more like a flower.
