This is the time of year for our native bluebells to flower, before the leaf cover in the woodlands blocks out too much light; but the season doesn't last long, so a chance remark about the display at Emmetts Garden, near Sevenoaks in Kent, was worth a try. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-emmettsgardenEven on the way there, it was clear that local woodland and hedgerows are ideal habitats for some impressive spreads of these ephemeral flowers. In the garden itself, there are some fine views, but at this time of year, the thing to see is the sweeping slopes of woodland which really are carpeted with bluebells, stretching into the distance till they look like a ground mist. It's hard to stop taking photos in the hope of getting that one perfect and complete image. In the end, only a video seems to give the full impression.

I had read about these bluebells in the woods but never seen them. Thank you.

Heart lifting.
Late April, then?
Only ~20 miles from London as crow flies. Can you take your bicycle on the train?

Really nice, Patrick. I really like it when each different plant has its separate week or two of total glory -- bluebells, daffodils, tulips, etc. Of course from time to time you totally miss it, because you were away, or preoccupied with other matters or whatever, but it is good to know that nature will keep its own calendar no matter what.

Yes, lola, I think they're a bit early this year, at least in the south of England. Around May 1st is always likely to be the best time. For this particular garden, it is possible entirely on public transport (train from London to Sevenoaks and rather infrequent bus from there to the nearest village, then walk about a mile): or the blogger diamondgeezer found a more strenuous route: diamondgeezer.blogspot.com/2011/05/emmetts-garden.html

They are in all their splendour here in South West England, too! but it is such a balm for the eyes! Thank you, Patrick!

Just wonderful, Patrick! I have to disagree with you about not "getting that one perfect and complete image', though. That last shot before the video is a triumph. The video was a special treat, with nothing but breeze and birdsong -- truly beautiful.
At 1:31 on the video, is that mother & child woodland creatures in the middle distance? Or maybe just a cat & kitten?

I think just humans, bixa. I tried to cut people out as much as possible, but there were some children having fun, and they got into the soundtrack.
