Northumberland is England's most northern county.
We had a few days in Alnwick, Northumberland last summer -
Day 1:
After unpacking we drove just a few miles to Newton by the Sea for lunch, the pub brews it's own beer:
The beaches were deserted:
Bamburgh Castle in the distance further up the coast:
After lunch we drove to Seahouses -
We sat for a while to take in the views -
this young starling seemed to enjoy the views too perched just a couple of feet away from where I was sitting -
Alnwick Castle - Hogwarts has made it a tourist attraction -

Day 2:
Alnwick Gardens - a lovely place to visit, water was a key feature -
Grand Cascade:
There were lots of very interesting water features too here's just a couple -
To each side of the Grand Cascade are arched walk ways covered with Beech, I think -
Ornamental Garden:
Bamboo Labyrinth which made a pleasant change to the usual Yew Maze:
I've never seen a Treehouse (cafe and restaurant btw) as large or impressive as this one before -
one of the Treehouse walk ways high in the trees -
The Rose Garden - it smelled absolutely wonderful, roses were growing everywhere, up the walls that surround it, up obelisks and pergolas too:
The Poison Garden
The Poison Garden is kept locked visitors are only allowed in with a guide! There were far too many plants for me to photograph all of them, here's just a few. There was a bed of nettles and rhubarb btw.
Castor Oil Plant, Ricinus:
Tobacco:
Alnwick Gardens have a licence from the Home Office to grow this -

Day 3:
Bamburgh Castle - photography wasn't allowed inside!
