Are these gentlemen looking for books to check out? Oh, those phlegmatic Brits!

Well, they had to have something to do in those long hours down in the shelters...

What a haunting and surreal photo. I would probably have joined those gents. That certain comfort in being around books, perhaps it calmed them.

There is a reason why - for all the shortage of paper to print on - very long books were popular in Britain during World War 2 (War and Peace, Gone With The Wind).
[When I typed that, I was agreeing with casimira; but as soon as I mentioned the paper shortage, another thought entirely came to mind, but we won't go there...]

Destruction and possibility. Perhaps a moment to pretend that it was all 'out there'. A moment 'out of time, out of place 'to be in a familiar way of life that is now so tenuous and may never be again. Perhaps a rare book section that they never could access before? I very much have a feeling of stolen calmness and a respite from a fearful present. Like Casi, I would go there.

And don't forget, nothing stops a librarian when they're stocktaking...
