Yeah, I wonder about people living on barges in Amsterdam - seems chilly (and frankly, give the light, the London pictures remind me more of Amsterdam than of Venice, though not the same architecture).
As for olive groves, they certainly wouldn't be happy with as little warmth as in London, but frost is not death on all varieties - when I was studying in Perugia, there were olive groves all about, and we definitely got frost, and sometimes as much snow as in Kerouac's Paris pictures - Perugia is quite high up, and the whole area is full of steep hills. But that doesn't last, and the summers are splendid.
There is a Greek fellow not far from me who has an olive tree in his tiny front garden, but he digs up the roots every autumn and lets it winter over in a glass case he built for it, like a tall bay window. I'm sure it will remain rather stunted because of this, though it is still alive. Our summers are much warmer than London but of course our winters are frigid (the Prairies are far worse)...
Those pictures are wonderful but are taking a long time to load.

lagatta - that's interesting information about the guy who digs up his olive tree and takes it indoors for the winter!
There are olive trees about in the UK but they look very sad. I think they're the latest 'must have'.

Just noted that I posted my canal pics on this thread almost exactly a year ago to the day. What a year! It has flashed by in the blink of the eye. I forget how much I loved living in that part of the UK. Wish I had taken more pics.

Patrick, you are perfectly welcome to link your blog here. I would like to think that a lot of these sites are interconnected.
