While enjoying greyghost2's wonderful shots in the "Chimneys" thread, it occurred to me we haven't yet explored the enormous visual interest to be discovered on rooftops. Here's a shot taken in Old Jerusalem a couple of years back to get us started...

NOTE: This photo does not really belong in this thread, as it is not a view from above. However, it was part of the original thread "rooftops" that is now merged with "Aloft - views from above". It was easier to leave it in rather than have people wonder why subsequent comments didn't make sense.Great theme, great photo, Imec! I took this from the other side of the boulevard because I was unable to decide if the bike was a real bike or a painted depiction.

Very interesting rooftops, imec. I'm surprised at all the satelite dishes and so many flat roofs.

Oh I love this bixa! My eyes were immediately drawn to the bicycle even before I read your introduction. This image would be very helpful in illustrating the importance of "focal point" (would be a good discussion for the rumored Photography Tips thread ).

imec...that's a great one! Almost too much for the eye to take in at one time.

Imec's rooftop is great, and bixa's is positively stunning, because of the hues, the details and the BIKE!

After a first night in Jakarta (in a nice hotel for once, because I was not travelling alone), we awoke to a strange military training session out the hotel window.

Rooftops fascinate me and I like all of these. Some of you should put together books of your photos!

I always seem to get the most amazing photos from up in a plane. You get a perfect birds eye view of whats below and of course the wonderful fluffy clouds just outside of the window. Do you have any pics to share from up above? This one was taken from a small 18 passenger plane, flying from Fredericton to Montreal:

Flying over the mountains of Laos on Lao Aviation, at that time considered to be the most dangerous airline in the world. (It went out of business in 2003, thank god.) This was in a Chinese built Y-9 propeller plane with about 20 seats.

Those are all great, guys. Asker, fantastic shot. Kerouac, that looks a bit scary, doubly so because the plane was so small. fumobici, the Swiss-French alps look amazing, you've captured them so well. Here are a couple of views from that same 18 passenger plane as we approach Montreal: And a little closer - the weather was not the greatest that day:

Here is a picture that I had no idea where to share. It is a view from my office window, in which I had intended to debunk the myth of " sunny California" as it rained all day and was rather chilly. Once I uploaded the photo, however, it appeared that the sun had made an attempt to shine and then changed the whole mood of my photo. I actually think the photo looks like a little fake city. Anyway, since it didn't seem to fall neatly into any existing category, I thought I would revive the "Aloft" thread, since this was taken from 15 stories up. That is "aloft" enough for me as I contemplate earthquake preparedness in my new city. The light colored building in the middle is the Los Angeles Public Library. This photo doesn't reflect the beauty of the building (and the inside is even better).

Magnificent photo, Cristina. I love how the library glows and that patch of turquoise in the foreground.
Is that the water on the horizon?

There's not much to land on in Male! I was just pleased that we stopped before hitting the water.
I have not yet adjusted to the fact that Montserrat is now just mostly an ash-covered abandoned place since the volcano attack.

Not much at all for aircraft! You can see the main international runway to the left in my photo. Its quite disconcerting/ disorientating for a few seconds to be flying in on the seaplane to land and see the runway far out of target until you remember that... of course you are going to land on the sea.
I have some photos which show some of the unaffected parts of Montserrat and the contrasts between the devastated parts , I will seek them out one day.
