Anyway, 10 usd for a 20 min trip? Is it me or isn't that a little expensive? I'm not familiar at all with that particular part of the world but my brain immediately computes that price as a western tourist price. Am I wrong then?
Is the dish for internet or phone use?

Yes, that's a pretty expensive boat trip, considering the boat trips of several hours that I took from Siem Reap to PP or from Snooky to Koh Kong. But I guess when you have a monopoly, you take advantage of it. I can't imagine paying $5 an hour for extra electricity either, unless it was the World Cup final and I was charging admission.
However, it's great as a "one time" trip because until you've done it, you don't know how it's going to be. I imagine that if the water had been gin clear, it would have made a different impression as well.

It's still being bumped along in a boat, she said grumpily.
Before we go any further, I want to ask -- what's the deal with the quotes?! Many of them are attributed to the wrong people, even though HW addresses the correct posters in his reply. Did you break the quote doohickey, HW?
The island looks very beautiful and very, very boring. I can understand your lack of enthusiasm. I got a laugh out of the guy on the left in the pic of the jolly bunch who put up the tents. He's checking his phone -- either for messages or to see how much longer he's stuck out there in nature.
The accommodations look like a SEA version of the ones at Hierve el Agua here, where the electricity often goes out. The up side is that the darkness makes the view of the stars fabulous.
How come you asked about the snake? Do you want to know what kind it is? I only know esnakes americanos, so can't even guess.

However, I'm sure that I saw some of them at the nearby Vietnamese snake market in the Mekong delta.

Excellent thread Hwinip...it's really interesting reading. The scenery looks breathtaking (I'd've wanted to paint it all) and the food.....erm.....adventurous! Looks like you had a brilliant time, the jeep seems to be a jolly good way to travel too, well ventilated. ;D

Yes, it is a snake. Either a crab eating snake or an eel eating sea krait I suspect the latter is a bit of a piss take. The 10USD is for the return trip, still expensive, it's a 'boat association' that does the runs. I thought the dish was for TV because there wasn't any mention of internet but there was of football. Fans will recall that it was Champions League Finals night. I imagine that if the water had been gin clear, it would have made a different impression as well. Yes, a lot had to do with the grey sky and the wind. I'll still not go again. If any island then it'll be one off Sihanoukville. It's still being bumped along in a boat, she said grumpily. Before we go any further, I want to ask -- what's the deal with the quotes?! How come you asked about the snake? Do you want to know what kind it is? I only know esnakes americanos, so can't even guess. I fixed the quotes. I've also figured out how to get the times right. I was too fast when I posted... We were not that cut off from the rest of the world, calls were possible as was receiving email. I was actually quite glad for the lousy weather. Had it been clear it would have been hot with no wind and we'd have gotten eaten up by mosquitos at night. Excellent thread Hwinip...it's really interesting reading. And on the way back we stopped twice to eat...

So now that you've been there & come back, how do you feel about Kampot vs. Kep? You said at the beginning of this thread that you might come back for a closer look when your mother & nephew visit. Is that still the plan?

Oh yes, for sure.
I'll just never ever go out to Rabbit Island again.
They'll be here for two weeks at the end of July and I've already booked the place in Kampot and another couple of days in Sihanoukville. I'll also be taking them up to Kratie to see the dolphins.

OMG! What if they had run out of food? I can imagine hwinpp going on a rampage.
The bungalow looks really nice, and I can certainly imagine why one would want to be on stilts during the rainy season.

;DOh boy ~~ I love this thread & am so happy to see it revived. What a great place to take your sister & her son. The misty tropicality must be wonderfully exotic to them. I'm trying to remember where they live. Is it Norway?
The pictures are absolutely beautiful, but I'm glad y'all didn't get trapped there.
"Rikitikitavi"?? Was there mongoose on the menu? ;D

The food there isn't that good, so we didn't eat there and I couldn't care less whether they run out of it or not ;D ;DOh boy ~~ I love this thread & am so happy to see it revived. They quite liked it though I'd have loved to go swimming with my nephew.

Very nice photos. Thanks for sharing. Lovely scenery, and the food looks mouth-watering.
But, OH MY GOD, THAT SNAKE IS HUGE! Scary.

Ha, ha. It was still cold and immobile, trying to catch the first rays of the sun. And it wasjust a meter long or so, must be the perspective that made it look longer.
;D
