Not particularly "pearlish" but always interesting to see certain opinions and the reasons for them:

"Maybe it just wasn't for us."
That may be the core reason. Sometimes you just like or really don't like a place and can't find a rational explanation.
To be perfectly honest, I didn't expect to care for Paris -- probably I'd bought into too many groundless negative stereotypes. Admittedly, I had a more perfect introduction to the city than could ever be logically expected. Even so, the things that impressed me were: 1) Cleanliness. Paris is awfully clean for such a huge city. 2) Wonderful food choices at Orly, which is rather a horrible airport. 3) Friendliness. I speak no French, and the few words I know, I mispronounce. Even so, I found the French outgoing, cheerful, and willing to be helpful.
I lucked out with good weather both times I was there, there were no strikes, & I was shepherded through transportation situations, so overall had a less stressful experience than Jessica A. Also, Paris is a city which shines brightly on the horizon of visitor's expectations, so any disappointment would be all the more keen.

I imagine too that this person would have liked Paris better if they hadn't had problems with the rail strikes which led to missing attractions and losing money. I do wonder what the overall effect of these rail strikes will be on the tourist industry this year.

It is believed that for every consumer who actually writes a letter like this, there are ten who thought the same but did not write about it. The strikes would have affected thousands of tourists as well as the local people. The latter know how to deal with the situation, but tourists and the tourist industry are the ones who really suffer in the confusion, disappointment and anger. Jessica A's feedback will go around the world and those deciding between Paris or Elsewhere for a holiday will be influenced by her experiences.
Did the strikers get what they wanted? or was it a completely negative exercise?

No, the strikers did not get what they wanted this time. Technically the strike continues but with fewer and fewer strikers each day.

Today I saw that strike tomorrow doesn't affect RER A at all and disrupt a little bit RER B. Didnt Check trains. I read in le canard that Macron moves in to reform retirement allowances. Then he will move on to social allowances. This guy may reform everything after all.

Tragic! The only hotel in Paris with a room is the George V/Four Seasons. I just didn't think the city was that crowded.
Help needed: stuck in Paris
Jun 19, 2018, 6:23 PM
Dear Evernote community,
My friend and her husband are traveling to France with their 2 children (6 and 8, I believe.) She had a minor accident yesterday and would like to stay in Paris longer than expected because she needs reevaluation by a doctor. However, they have been unable to find housing today, either apartment or hotel (the delay just came up last night, and they were supposed to be on the way already.) They are pretty stressed as their only option appears to be Four Seasons at 1300 at night, on top of unexpected medical and other expenses. Can anyone here help? It's greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone. They are at Four Seasons now. I will forward all the ideas to them. They may need to spend the rest of the week.

How tragic. Spending money (hum, throwing away money) seems to be a substiture for not having a brain for some people.

Good to know there are rooms available. I may extend my trip & will just nip over and book into the Four Seasons right now.

I wonder if it is like jeuxvideo.com whose forum became the #1 contact forum for French jihadists who weren't playing games at all.

My Rudest French experience:
How Rude Can One Be?
In 2005, my Caucasian lady friend and I had arrived mid-morning at Gare du Nord after an exhausting all night journey. I approached an official counter in well-attended part of the terminal, and before I could say more than a sentence, the young white woman – in her early 20's – looked daggers at me, threw her left arm to her side – gesturing – and yelled: “English!”. She looked at me like she wanted me dead, nearly spitting. A young white man in his late teens or early 20's at a desk looked on and giggled, like a little girl.
I, of Asian-Polynesian extraction, was stunned... just nodded and went back to my friend to recover. We had to get our Euro Passes validated; a more mature, courteous woman helped us do that, in another part of the terminal
Needless to say, I have never visited France again. I have never purchased anything French, e.g. wine, food, gifts; “made in France” and “French” mean to me rudeness and small-mindedness. I always experience schadenfreude when I read or hear of French misfortunes.

Well, that's it for the French then. The schadenfreude I experienced reading that was almost unbearable. (WTF?)

Why does she need to specify her friend is Caucasian and she of Asian origin ? She comes from a country where it poses a problem ?
How much rudest it would have been if she had 'yelled' 'en français bon sang !'
Lots of people find people yell at them on forums. I have never been yelled at in such circumstances. People do raise their voice to be heard though.

Asian-Polynesian. I would guess the writer is from Fiji. That country has had some nasty times recently with Oz army needed to keep a lid on things after coups and racial tensions. The Polynesians own the land but are not hard workers like the Indians. Indians are the merchants and value education and hard work and hold many of the administrative positions. (this comes from my Sikh girlfriend)
Possibly the writer was super-sensitive thinking the woman was picking on him for having a Caucasian friend or his own bi-racial situation. It sounds like he (?) looks for negativity and pay-back wherever he goes.

I lived near a laundry in New Orleans that had something painted vertically on the wide lintels either side of the door. "Suits cleaned" was on one side, I think, and the other side proudly proclaimed "Shits pressed". It was like that for years.

Aaaaagggghhh ~ what happened after she heard him talking in the basement? What basement? This is priceless. Well, not priceless -- we know the price tag.
I admit I have wondered where all the money comes from for the oh-so Instagramable destination weddings and the like. And the time, for that matter. Do these people not have jobs?
