"Belgian police probe murders of ten internet daters who died after emptying bank accounts and flying to Africa to marry. ‘Bride’ claims new husband became ill and died" "The victims – who didn’t know each other – all flew to Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, to meet a dark African beauty. They gave up their lives in Belgium to marry her after forming an attachment to her over the net." www.cameroononline.org/2011/06/17/belgian-police-probe-murders-of-ten-internet-daters-who-died-after-emptying-bank-accounts-and-flying-to-africa-to-marry/Are people really that stupid? They must be if this is accurate. But I am constantly amazed by the absolute lack of common sense of some humans. As Einstein said - "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."

i suppose they were men who don't meet women easily... so when one actually wants to marry them, they don't even dare to suspect something is wrong...
then again, there are people who do indeed meet their partner over the internet, though...

I don't know if stupidity is the right word. I have known several men who romantically and blindly will imbue a woman, whether someone they know in real life, or a pen/internet pal, with all kinds of virtues the woman herself doesn't claim to have. It's always very intense -- she's THE one -- and often the guy will go on and on about how much he and this paragon have in common, in a way that can be breathless and naive: She likes beet soup. I love beet soup, that kind of thing.
And every one of these men I've known have been physically attractive, intelligent, social, and have had long-term relationships in their lives.
I don't know if this trait is some kind of intense romanticism that needs to be grown out of, or if it's a form of narcissism ("we're so much alike -- it's like talking to myself!").
Whatever -- someone adept in preying on others would certainly know how to identify this personality type and reel them in by saying all the right things.

Do you really think its only males that have this trait of intense romanticism, I dont think so. I think women can be just as susceptible to these kinds of feelings............

No, not at all, Foreverman. Women certainly have the reputation of being that way, whereas there are also men with the trait. I was responding to the OP title of "male stupidity".

After pondering whether it is a male or female thing I re-read the link and decided it's because they are Belgian.

Actually my ancestors, as many English are now, were French. But I think it's just we have an aversion to any johnny foreigner from the continent.

well there are also a lot of guys from poorer countries going after women from richer countries to get their money or their help to get abroad - like the "bridgeros" in peru... so i would suppose these things can happen to women just as well.

Women were probably not even behind this scam. Anybody can post a fake picture.
