I took a walk around my garden and I thought I'd share some of the photos I took today, it looks like the summer will soon be over:

You live in such a beautiful, unspoiled place, Deyana! Some of those photos certainly seem to suggest the time of crisp mornings and frosty evenings. The clearings through the trees on your property give such a magical feel to it. I love that photo looking into the clearing through the evergreens, with the wind chime in the foreground.
What kind of tree is that with the shaggy bark? (& why did your son put a plank there?)

It is very unspoiled, Bixa. I like it that way. Walking around the area always makes me feel calm and in touch with nature. Sometimes I see deer and other animals, down the road is a cattle farm, I'll take some more photos and add them to this thread. Be interesting to see how the seasons change here... Why my son put that plank of wood up in that tree, I really don't know. I just remember him saying that it'll fall down of it's own accord eventually.

I'd like to wander around there eating one of those apples! Nice!

Imec, those apples look better then they taste, believe me! There are tons of apple trees around here, and only some of the apples can be used, most have defects. Maybe once upon a time, they were well kept, but no longer. More pictures to follow soon.

Lots of late summer lovely days. You are indeed very lucky to live there, deyana.

Thanks, K. I just realized the picture quality is not very good, but anyway...

Deyana, if you install a program like Paint.NET (free) on your computer, it can help you make photos look better. My camera is not all that great and I guess I don't hold it steady enough because my photos are definitely not as sharp as I'd like.* I don't have a before and after, but the sixth picture down in Reply #1 here was really fuzzy. Since I wanted to use it in that thread, I applied the "sharpen" feature in Paint.NET. It didn't make it perfect, but it did make it acceptable. *(it would also help if I really understood what all the settings on my camera mean )

I think that sharp photos will be important if we start a turd thread.

Bixa, thanks, I think I'll try that.
Kerouac, turds fascinate me almost as much as public toilets do! A turd thread, now that's an idea. ;D
I've seen all different kinds around here, trying to match it with the animal is a science in itself!

I hope you mean the actual shit and my thread! ;D
You have to admit, I take a damn good photo of crap.

Around here this time of year coyote droppings are mostly berry seeds. Looks a bit like bear scat but probably something else.

fumobici, I think you are right. I've just been told that a large amount of grassy areas have been flattened at the back, and apples have been found thrown around, as well as more large droppings. Bears, has to be. There are quite a few around right now too. See if I can capture one on film...

I went out yesterday evening looking for a bear. All I found was a ton more droppings, some huge, but no bear. Just thought this news might interest some. I will keep on looking. They sleep during the day don't they?

Deyana, isn't this the time of year when they're out trying to eat enough to sustain them through hibernation? Be sure to remove any buttons from your clothing, earrings, etc. so the poor things don't choke.

I've seen a lot of bear sh*t, and this doesn't look like a bear to me. It would help if there was a ruler or coin in the photo for scale, but it looks more like it comes from a deer that has been eating greens. OR a cow or horse. Bear scat has buttons in it, doesn't it? Seriously, bear scats have always been more TEXTURED when I've seen them, and this time of year should be full of berry pits.

#12 should have a 'not' in it. i.e. not my thread. Kimby, I don't want to argue over crap, ;D but - that doesn't look like horse or cow manure to me at all. It has no grassy texture to it at all. There's plenty of cows around here, and believe me their poop looks very different. Not only that but these dropping went on the road and crossed over to the other side, into the bush. The cows wouldn't be able to do that, and the horses wouldn't be going that way either. As for the berries, no, non around here, not that I've seen, not even wild berries. Deer droppings are very different to this, here's a pic. of deer droppings, very unlike the photo I posted. or even: My opinion is it's either a bear or a moose. Coyotes? Perhaps, but it would have to be a pack of them. (doubtful).

No doubt, I'll probably bump into one when I'm least expecting it. What to do then? That's the question. I best start practicing my tree climbing skills...oh wait, they can climb too can't they? Oh well, if you don't hear from me again, you know the bears have got me, either them or the coyotes. I'll make sure to ask them who did the poop however. ;D

That was a very well fed deer. And I hope for Deyana's sake that the bears have had a very bountiful summer as well and are in a good mood.

I picked up the following information from a book I read long ago. I do believe it. If you meet a bear and you are a woman then you'll be all right if you do this: Lift up your clothes and show the bear your bare breasts . Apparently bears respect women and on seeing your breasts (and that you are not a man) they will amble off and leave you alone. If I met a bear that is what I would do. * I would love to walk around your garden with you, Deyana. I'm pretty sure your boy was thinking of building a tree house. Angel looks great. Does she bark at night when you get animal visitors outside your house? (is she inside?)

If you meet a bear while out hiking and he charges, immediately sit down and lace on your running shoes. You cannot outrun a bear, but you only have to outrun your hiking companions....

I've just laughed out so loud that my son came in to see what had happened!! ;D Just the image of me putting my shirt up to show the bear my breasts is so funny! What if it's a female bear? She might think I was after her 'man' LOL! She might attack me just for that. ;D I wonder what size boobs they prefer? Well, when I bump into one, let's just hope it's a friendly (well fed) bear, maybe we could even arrange to meet up for cute little picnics once in a while, share some berries, you know how it goes ;D Spindrift, yes, I think my son wants a tree house, but I don't think that particular tree is the right one for that. We've been so busy, maybe next summer we'll built one...

Deyana, we have a turd very much like your photo on our driveway. I would take a picture of it, but I drove over it...
My feeling was that it was just a big juicy deer turd, the bean-shaped deer turds are from deer eating normal to dry food. Bear turds tend to be stools, rather like humans only larger and "crunchier". I've never seen a bear turd like the one you photographed. I have seen plenty of variation in deer turds, including ones that look like your photo. (But again, the lack of scale may be throwing me off.)
I'm bringing my bear spray as well as my jogging shoes if we hike together Deyana!

It could be deer turd, Kimby. The poop mystery deepens ;D Yes, definitely bring the bear spray, either that or be ready to do a striptease, (for the bears not for me)

deyana, if you really want to know who made your turd, these two sites might help... en.allexperts.com/q/Wild-Animals-705/2009/7/Scat-identification-1.htm"I've seen these in places like Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, and I, too, have wondered what they are. Because of their content, I wonder if they could be from a ruminant animal, such as an elk or pronghorn "antelope". I know these produce pelleted fecal droppings, too. But I've seen these wafer-poops in proximity of pellets and wonder if the animals may produce these other types, too. I've also seen wafer-like scats like these attributed to moose
I think they might be a sign of intestinal perturbation in the animal, which can happen to just about anyone." (unfortunately both picture links in this site are broken links) And, these folks will actually ID your turd if you send them a photo and answer the questions on this page: icwdm.org/Inspection/scat.aspThey're in Nebraska, though, so may have less experience with your canadian wild neighbors...
