It's a thin line between a career in crime and a career in politics. We all know it, but nothing demonstrates it better than the two brothers who ran Boston and beyond back in the 80's. Quote: He was also accused of leading a notorious organized crime group that operated in Boston, Massachusetts more than two decades ago. Bulger, who was captured in Santa Monica in June 2011, had been wanted since 1995 on multiple counts including murder, extortion, racketeering and drug dealing.
That placed him on the FBI's list of "most wanted fugitives" alongside Osama Bin Laden and several alleged drug barons.
His brother William was a Massachusetts state senator and also served as state senate leader.I first became interested in Whitey Bulger when Micheal McDonald talked about him in his book 'All souls'. Micheal is a friend now, and I've learned a lot more about what Mr. Bulger did back then. It is surprising how he got away with it and for so long. He was directly and indirectly responsible for many deaths, suicides, murders and drug related crime back then, some of which has only now surfaced. We were out for dinner, down the road, tonight and the owner of the restaurant, also owns a condo apartment in Boston where she lived for many years. The apartment above was a relative of Whitey Bulger! It was interesting to hear about it from a Boston resident! This man, by accounts of the media, was an absolutely horrible individual if even half of the reports are true. Mich

It's amazing how many lives Bulger touched with all his dealings. And all in a negative way. I have a feeling what is said about him is all true. Michael says that he was in court yesterday to watch what happened with Whitey Bulger, looks like he didn't ask for bail, probably because he knew he didn't stand a chance anyway. He is 81 years old now and very frail looking, not the menacing violent man that terrorized so many back then. This must have been very hard for Michael to do as he lost three brothers, while living in the projects in Boston, an area that was controled by Whitey in the 80's.

I don't think I have ever heard of this person before. Sounds like a movie should be made about him, though.

Kerouac, if you have seen the movie "The Departed" with Jack Nicholson, a film by Martin Scorsese, then you have seen the character of Whitey Bulger as Jack's part in the movie was based on Whitey. Cheers, Mich

I confess that I avoid films containing Jack Nicholson whenever possible.

It's about time I watched 'The departed'. Thanks for reminding me, mich.
I'm wondering what kind of sentence he will get? There's talk of the death penalty. But since he's being shipped over to Boston now to face the music who knows? It would have been much more satisfying to have caught and sentenced him 20 odd years ago.
