I'm just back from a few days in lovely Wales...we stayed in a little log cabin (shed with a bed) in woodland near the village of St Clears in Carmarthenshire.... the weather was splendid...I spent a lot of time trying to photograph the birds of prey flying overhead...but my camera wasn't really up to the challenge....2 buzzards circled overhead as I sipped a glass or seven of wine on the veranda most afternoons... the site was splendid....soooo quiet, just birdsong and the occasional tractor by day. I saw lots of lovely wild birds but wasn't able to capture any on film (too slow) Got a few pics to post.....

I am hoping that you do show us more. A few questions.. 1. What was that mechanical contraption? A Water pump? 2. What was for sale inside the store named Castle Stores? 3. In the water photos, are those pebbles/stones?
All the photos are beautiful Cheery! Glad you were able to have a nice vacation.
Cheers Mich

Thanks chaps.... We did have a very good holiday. We drove to Wales in our own car, a distance of about 290 miles. We took our time...using motorways for the first 3/4 of the journey and then moved onto small country roads. Mich dearie... this is an old fashioned petrol pump, used to see them all over the place, especially in rural areas. Castle Stores sold a lot of jolly nice wine, Welsh whisky and beer (bought some of that for my Dad!), some fancy goods...some local and some the sort of things you can buy anywhere...nicknacks like scarves, very nice handbags and mass produced ornaments. The beach pics show small pebbles, rocks and shells...this area of Wales displays a greater variety of geological features and associated landforms than any equivalent area of the same size in the British Isles...so there are any number of different types of rock..I'm not a geologist tho ;D

One day we went into Temby, an old fashioned seaside town about 25 miles from where we were staying. I managed to drag OH into a few shops...got myself some new sandals. ;D the only other person on the beach....I don't know what he was fishing for along the beach were rocks and caves...saw these pigeons on a nest at the back of a large cave that'll do for now...

That looks just beautiful, Cheery, and obviously the weather could not have been better. I have not had the chance to go to Wales yet, but it should come as no surprise that the natural features such as the cliffs and outcroppings are very reminiscent of Brittany.

You've done good Cheery! Your photos are e x c e l l e n t!! My fav one is the rock with seaweed clinging to it (Newgale). But it was hard to choose as they are all very interesting and show how beauiful Wales is. Next visit I would like to do more of the coastline.

Wonderful report to go with a wonderful trip. Wales doesn't get much press overseas except for when they want to talk about silly long names in Welsh.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh, Cheerykins ~~ the variety! the beauty!
I almost can't believe this thread, and want to look at it over and over again. You really took some knock-out shots AND you went to Laugharne. Can't thank you enough for the shots of Dylan Thomas's house and the area around it. The one titled "view from the wall" is a poem in itself. What really killed me is that blooming shrub in the first pic of his house. I recently bought a small plant & posted about needing an ID in Putting Down Roots. That's the plant!
After calming down from that, I looked at the rest of the thread, which is dazzling in the wild beauty of the countryside. You give good bridge, too.
Thanks so much for this -- just looking at your pictures is almost a vacation.

;D lovely comments, you are nice chaps Hwinpp...how could I forget?!!! I will make a special effort in future to photograph the food we have..tbh we just cooked stuff ourselves as the lodge had a pretty good kitchen. Nothing fancy. However I did go along to the local butchers (Eynon's has been in the same family selling local produce for 5 generations) and bought a beautiful leg of Preseli Bluestone Lamb...cooked it for the family on Sunday and it was delicious! Also bought some bacon and sausages for the freezer (but they've all gone already because OH and son found them!) Welsh food.... www.wales.com/en/content/cms/English/About_Wales/Wales_today/Food/Food.aspx

I would have enjoyed spending time in that shop Cheery, and would have spent far too much money I am sure.
The red telephone booth made me laugh as we were just over visiting my husbands brother the other day and he built one exactly like that. But not to hold a telephone, he fitted it with shelves to hold his collection of motorbike helmets. This is a man that is still very much a boy! But it is a lovely piece of furniture/art. He does these works as a hobby. I will have to do a photo essay of all his pieces, quite amazing actually.
Thank you for the lovely tour, my maternal grandmother was from Wales and my paternal great great grandfather was from Devon. I have a distant cousin that I correspond with that lives in Devon. I have always wanted to visit Wales and now even more so. I would not mind seeing more of those 900 photos you have!
Cheers, Mich

Cheers Mich dearie, if we had the room I would have an old red telephone box in the garden...to use as a little greenhouse (I'd also have a blue police telephone box but that's so that I could pretend to be Dr Who ) I am really looking forard to seeing pics of your BiL's work ;D

Now for the important question -- do people really eat Welsh rarebit all the time? (known as croque monsieur in France )

I thought I would investigate why Cheery did not see lashings of Welsh Rarebit being consumed whilst busy with capturing those wonderful photos!! Kerouac will be shocked to find out that Welsh Rarebit and Croque Monsieur are not all the same The latter equates to our Toasted cheese sandwich but the Welsh cheesy dish is more like a sauce. Anyway, just for fun here is the explanation and recipe: historicalfoods.com/welsh-rarebit-recipe

Actually, there are numerous regional variations of croque monsieur and some of them are pretty close to rarebit. One thing that all of the rest of the French tend to agree on is that the things we eat in Paris are NOT croque monsieurs.

I came late to this: what a lovely place. It horrifies me how little I know of the UK. Though I seem to remember hearing that Tenby is or was a favourite place for hen parties. Or something like that.
