I had left the hotel and I was on my way to the cemetery where my family has resided unattended for the past two years. Then I checked my pockets, my jacket, my bag and pictured where my telephone must be. Very luckily, I had only gone about 6 kilometres to stop at a hypermarket petrol station. So I returned to the hotel and collected my phone from the room. The receptionist was amused and also glad to see a happy ending because hotel receptionists don't have a very interesting life at 08:00 and any little event is a plus.

Just been told that my phone service provider will be closing their pay-as-you-go service. Since I mostly use it as a mini-internet machine over wi-fi, people like me aren't much of a customer, I know; but it appears that what most providers call a PAYG service is what I would call a monthly contract, rather then the "traditional PAYG" I want. To be fair, they're giving plenty of notice (I've got until January), and it's not difficult to "port" the existing number, so I shouldn't lose anything, but it's an irritation all the same. I currently have a Spanish SIM, a German SIM and a Bosnian SIM. All are just PAYG and I didn't realise until last week but the one I want to use data on, the German one, doesn't allow it. I'll have to sort that out next time I'm there.

I pulled a French White Corningware glass dish out of the cupboard too hastily last night, causing its mate to fall onto the granite countertop, where it shattered noisily into 1000’s of pieces.
I’m still sweeping up shards today. I also cut my finger on a larger piece. It looks like ceramics but it’s glass, so very sharp, and I bled all over before I realized I was cut so I’m also wiping up blood spots today, too.
Worst part is that I recently passed up the opportunity to acquire several more of these dishes, from my inlaws’ stash in the condo we are selling fully-furnished. I thought I had enough…

Our daughter and her family were supposed to come yesterday evening and stay over today. Last night about 6 I got a call saying her younger daughter (3 last August) had fallen down some cement stairs in her hurry to visit her grandparents and was at the emergency department with her father.
They came this morning, the little girl has 4 stitches in her forehead but refuses to take off the hospital bracelet with her name on it.

I also cut my finger on a larger piece. Those things break into a million pieces to protect us from cutting ourselves. You were clearly too energetic in cleaning up. refuses to take off the hospital bracelet with her name on it. It might be special treasure for an entire week unless the parents suggest an appropriate museum for it.

Tempered glas is expected to shatter in tuny pieces.
Our daufhter fell on her forehead when about 3. She got an ecchymose the size of an egg. We can still see it when she frowns.

Woke up this morning with a broken piece of tooth in my mouth and a matching hole in lower jaw. No pain but needs a temp dressing. Phoned all my contacts to find someone to mind my dog while I see dentist at 12 30. Everyone is busy. So much for moving to a new area to live...I have lost my network. Finally rang vet who offered to put her in one of their cages for the hour or so. Now I have to work out the bus system...

Sorry you have lost your network Questa. There are good things and not so good things about moving, this one you must miss a lot.
The first 5 years or so after my injury, I was fortunate that there was a dental hygenist who ran a mobile service (actually is a friend as well) who came to our home. My husband would help her bring all her equipment down to the house. I am fortunate to have dental care insurance through my employer.

Well, it went off better than I had thought. The girls in the pet vet place looked after Pixi and didn't charge because the played with her. The dentist did the whole repair in one hit and my 6 month check-up at the same time to save me making another appt. Oh...it rained , but I only got a little damp.

A double disaster in the Kimby kitchen this morning: I set up the coffee maker without realizing that the brew basket was still in the dish drainer. (See pet peeves.)
Fortunately the water drained through the filter and coffee grounds without spilling all over the counter like it usually does when I make this mistake. (Yes, I’m a slow learner!)
I figured there were probably plenty of grounds that made their way into the coffee pot, though, so I tried to strain the coffee through a sieve into another pot so I wouldn’t get grounds in my teeth.
I thought I was being so clever to set the sieve in the top of the coffee maker and I was pouring merrily away when I became aware of coffee spilling off the edge of the counter and into the opened drawer below!
By the time I collected my wits and stopped pouring, coffee had spread over the countertop and down the front of the drawer bank below. All three drawers had puddles of coffee in them and on them and dripping from them onto the floor.
What a mess! Everything in the front part of each drawer was wet with coffee, including my booklets of lists for the lake cottage and hiking and ski trips, etc. I had to rinse and dry multiple measuring cups and plastic storage containers, and there was even coffee dripping into the air vents of my electric mixer.
Note to self: next time, remove the carafe’s lid before trying to pour a large quantity of coffee into it!
Coffee shouldn’t be so difficult! (In my defense, I hadn’t had my coffee yet when I made these mistakes!)

It is even more annoying when it is a "simple" mistake.

I am very prone to coffee disasters.

(In my defense, I hadn’t had my coffee yet when I made these mistakes!) You're a smart lass, Kimby. Why haven't you learned to set up the coffee pot every night? All you have to do the next morning is bumble over to it & press the button. You don't even have to open your eyes until an exquisite fragrance announces that the magic elixir is brewed and ready to drink.

It’s incomprehensible, bixa. My coffee pots even have built in clocks and timers that would let me set it them to brew before I get up, letting me wake up and smell the coffee!
But I often forget to set it up at bedtime. Plus I don’t bother to set the clocks after power outages so using the convenient automatic feature isn’t so convenient.

I dunno ~ set a little ding on your phone that would tell you to go set up the pot at night?
When I'm having a morning where I'm tempted to go back to sleep, I just say to myself, "But if you get up, you can have coffee!" Works every time.

When I'm having a morning where I'm tempted to go back to sleep, I just say to myself, "But if you get up, you can have coffee!" Works every time. I do the same Bixa, except I can have a cup of tea! Kimby, our power often goes out as well, but I am the opposite of you, I have to reset the clocks as soon as the power comes back. When I am up before sunrise, I have a bad habit of not turning on all of the kitchen lights, many times I have over poured the kettle into my tea and all over the counter and often spilling onto the floor.

I needed my French health card today and it wasn't there. However, I backtracked in my mind over the last few days and went to the pharmacy to ask if they had it. The pharmacists are always super careful to return your card after filling a prescription. But I was dumbfounded at the size of the pack of cards that they had to check before finding mine.

You will notice that here is a huge hole in our otherwise admirable health system - almost no dental coverage .

A lot of dental work is not covered in France either. Only basic crowns for example, but not ceramic ones. Implants are covered very little and that depends on your extra insurance (mutuelle). I know Kerouac says he goes to the dental school in Paris, but that is not an option for most people who don't live near a faculty of dentistry.

And even I had to pay a significant amount for implants, albeit less than 50% of the market rate.

My niece has her 50th birthday party on 12th December
My granddaughter has her baby shower on 13th November
Guess who got mixed up and thought that the baby shower was tomorrow (12th November) so I made a lovely white chocolate tart, bought flowers for the hostess (DiL's mother...I'm terrified of her for some reason), wrapped up GD's birthday presents and the baby gifts...a home made cot quilt and home made pram quilt plus a turtle toy and a few bits of clothing....arranged for son to look after the dog...thank goodness I spoke to DiL....we would've turned up laden in our glad rags a day early...
