Let's talk about it here. Probably many of us spend a great deal of time talking or thinking about it. This thread was prompted by a news article I just saw, about Kirstie Alley modeling Zang Toi's fashions on the catwalk. The article has reader comments at the end which I find shocking in their hostility. For one thing, I can't for the life of me see that she's so obese. For another, what's with the hate? I'm not a particular fan of hers, although I always thought she was exceptionally pretty and that it was too bad she had such a weight problem, which must have been distressing for her and bad for her career. But is this woman fat fat? There's a sexist element in this, too. If we read about Wendell Pierce, for instance, there doesn't seem to be the same compulsion to point out that the man might need to lose a few. How do you all feel about fatness in a person? Do you feel pity, scorn, identification, what? Anyway, here's Kirstie Alley practicing for the catwalk: Source: au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/fashion/galleries/photo/-/10255378/sexy-at-60/10255403/

My fault, Cheery, as I have stuff to say & should have answered you.
I can really run to fat, even though I try to control it. At the moment, I feel I'm overweight and not just because I come from a skinny-worshipping culture.
I know my pudge comes from lack of sufficient exercise and eating the wrong things for consolation when depressed, bored, or frustrated. Even though I don't judge other people for being overweight, I truly despise myself for it. When I'm at my fighting weight, I feel more confident and vibrant. Yes, I am shallow.

I tend to carry a couple of stone more than I should...but it's because I am a greedy person. I eat too much. As a child I remember being hungry a lot of the time, now I'm an adult I should take responsibility for myself and DO something, and I have actually been slim (relatively) in the past when I've been very strict with myself.
I will lose weight tho...if things carry on as they are we won't be able to afford to eat much anyway. ;D I need to get my head in gear and sort myself out...there is a danger I may reach critical mass and explode any minute.
My gravitational pull is slightly worrying too...I've attracted several small asteroids and there is a distinct possibility that my dense bulk will create a dip in the fabric of time....eeh....

I've always thought that Kirstie Alley was totally correct to be comfortable with her body. However, there is no excuse for her hair.

hm i am currently constantly gaining weight though i try to exercise and eat less (but in the end always give up with that. i like food, and i like sweets, and i can't see myself spending my life constantly wanting something i can't allow myself to have...). it is annyoing me quite a bit, i always thought i am not concerned with these things, but that was back when i seemed to stay thin without effort... the most annoying thing is that mr. r. weighs less than me. had he just one kg more than me, i think i'd feel more fine with it...

I never concerned myself about my weight, but since my injury my weight has been increasing. I work hard at physical therapy and found on my recent trip that my leg did not perform as well as it should have. We did walk a lot but I think what was most difficult was the stairs in the metro stations. Now I am looking at a stationary bike to help keep my cardio active while we work on this new problem. Of course I am going to have to find a diet change that is satisfying as well. I just want to be a healthy weight. Cheers, Mich

I'm naturally thin and my best friend is way too heavy. She's beautiful inside and out, just too much of her.
(continuing this post, now that Mr. Kimby is done with the computer)
I worry about her health, and her mental state, as she pines for the days she was thinner than me. But she has had a lot on her plate lately, as her younger daughter received a kidney from her older daughter this summer, and all three are healing from a hellacious two years of the 12 year old's illness.
On the bright side, she has no wrinkles and I will soon be a dried up prune!

Apart from a brief window (of opportunity) when I met and married Mr CPB I've allus been chunky...what Myrt and I used to call 'a quivering mountain of voluptuous temptation' (QMVT for short...the phrase was used by the two of us a lot...).
Mr CPB prefers well covered ladies (luckily) and is a bit of a feeder....he seemed to spend our entire courtship taking me out for meals, buying me sweeties and generally encouraging gluttony...

Mich, you were a gymnast, weren't you? And Rikita, for a long time you were a student who biked and frequently climbed, right? I've always heard that people who are quite athletic efficiently metabolize what they eat, plus of course athletes would burn more calories. Apparently, when such people lower their levels of activity, their metabolism causes them to gain weight more easily than people who were never athletes. Is this true?
Mick says wine is a temptation. Does everyone have a particular item that might be preventing them from losing weight?
I'm good about some things -- butter and fats in general, don't drink beer all the time, etc. -- but I think I just plain eat too much for my activity level.

I played cricket until I was 53 and slipped a disc which ended my sporting career. I keep thinking of going back to tennis but haven't quite made it yet...

Recent research has confirmed the old cliche of the size of the olfactory organ to be in direct proportion to the size of the male............ - opposite to the relation between it and the size of the SUV/pick up
This is confirmed when you realise very few Romans, who typically had larger than average noses, were ever seen driving around in muscle cars.

Yes Bixa, I was a competitive gymnast up till the age of 16. Love the sport! I actually am now coaching a gymnast and having so much doing it.
I do think that my active childhood also allowed me to eat whatever I wanted being that my body needed the energy to keep up with my activity level.
It is very rare that I drink now and I am not a large eater today, but I think my weight has to do with my inactivity, aging metabolism and a desire for a dessert maybe too often.
Cheers! Mich

It does seem that some people are skinny kids and teens, then seem to gain weight fairly easily once they're adults. Men especially, are sometimes painfully thin until they're almost thirty, then finally fill out.

Yeah, I was thinking of people like Gene Vincent: >>> He went from having those pointy places on his cheekbones of the very skinny to, well, to not having any pointy places at all. I guess Frank Sinatra would be another one, but with him I think it was more gradual & much later.

I am sorry to read that your mother upset you Rikita, I really believe that they do not realize how these comments can affect you. I am sure that they are concerned about your health but that is not how the comments make you feel when they say them. Also my mother will reminds me how hard it is to lose weight the older I get.
I personally am trying to lose weight and am buying an exercycle this week and also have been researching healthier eating choices. I wish they would understand that making life changes is difficult and making us feel sad or guilty is not helpful. I do think they want to keep their little girls as they remember them.
Wishing you the best Rikita, Cheers, Mich

And the pictures I've seen of you, you are not heavy, but muscular for all your rigorous activities.
