I have no idea why this movie stuck with me as a child when I saw it for the first time on TV. Perhaps I already had the travel bug. It was about 3 young women visiting Rome and finding love, so it was well over my aspirations at the time, except perhaps for the idea of visiting Rome.
Anyway, a news report tonight showed what a great idea it is to thrown coins into the Trevi fountain. They are collected every day at dawn by municipal officials under police surveillance, and all of the money is used to finance a free supermarket for the poor.
The supermarket users in the report gave their heartfelt thanks to the tourists of the world for throwing coins into the fountain, whatever their reason.

There sure were a lot fewer tourists around there in the 1950s (?) than when we were there, the last time a couple of years ago. And that was in October! Actually I remember seeing that movie on TV when I was a kid too. Tourists certainly aren't dressed the same way any more! Neither are the Italians.

Yes, I have fond memories of that film, but since I was little, I always confused it with "Roman Holiday". The spoilt prince bored me to tears but the young clerk studying law, from a poor peasant family in the Castelli outside Rome was most appealing.
Of course Roman Holiday had Vespas!
