My machine is a bit of a sod and I can never get the thread in the right place so it doesn't disappear down the hole and get tangled up with the other thread.

Fabulous news about Sophie Questa....good luck dear girl x I'm not enjoying using the sewing machine (or THAT INFERNAL MACHINE as I call it). Jeffers seems to think that I should know how to work it by now...because I'm a girl. My very loud cussing (as I again fail completely to sew a straight line) has sent husband, son AND dog scuttling for cover. A girl according to my heart !

Poor little Sophie...I collected her yesterday at the arranged time and saw that she was wearing the same bulky coat that she wore for her photo and when I was there last week. Her foster carer had a fall last week and said she had not been able to "pretty Sophie up" for me. I held her in my lap as we drove home and soon I could smell doggy-poo...then realised she was covered in fleas.
Once home I phoned my grand kids who live nearby. They attend an Agricultural High School which teaches care of animals. They took over and listed possible problems that the vet had "missed" in the vet check. Sophie was riddled with fleas and had faecal matter stuck on her head, ears and around her face where she had tried to chew it off. It was stuck so hard we had to scissor it off. She had a rash on her backside and tummy and a lump in her groin and possible cataracts in her eyes.
G-daughter set to work and Sophie had a thorough workover. She stood happily for 40 minutes in very warm water as she was massaged then fine combed and stinking stuff removed from ears and muzzle. The fur on her back is very thin, almost bald. So...what to do? I think I should let the owner of the place know, not say anything to foster or RSPCA . I will ask for a copy of their vets report. She is so sad looking and tries so hard to please me.

Poor baby! You and your grandchildren must feel like a real blessing to her. Imagine, checking YOU out to see if YOU’RE suitable.

Sophie is lucky, but that does sound like a case of false advertising and outright dishonesty on the part of both the previous owner and the RSPCA.

If the people sold that dog to you they should be closed down and banned from keeping animals. How disappointing for you, I hope she recovers and thrives.

Questa you are in a predicament - One I'm sure you will solve without causing too much upheaval. But your conscious will not let you rest when you think of the other poor little dogs being tortured by neglect. Thats what it is. Pure neglect. That tells me the foster carer has no idea about looking after animals or has gone off the boil and it's far too much for them. People start with a good heart but being elderly does not leave you in a good place for meticulous attention to detail. Her home must be riddled with flease and flies. You know what to do.
Pee Ess: I suspect that "doggie coat"she is wearing has caused the loss of hair. My vet told me years ago that dogs acclimatise to each season without too much help.

Anyway, now we completely understand the concept of the term «rescue animal.»

Poor little thing and not fair on you questa. But she’ll be fine!
I had something years ago with Oscar, my Yorkie. We put him into kennels whilst we went away and he came out looking just like Sophie. Never went to kennels again.

A few months in your care and Sophie will be a new dog, questa. She deserves some loving, and I predict she will give it back in great measure.

I have an appointment with my vet for Sophie for Thursday morning. I want her to examine and record what she finds then I will add what my g-kids found when they got Sophie cleaned up.
I am going to find another name for her as I have seen dogs often do well with fresh life and names, toys, utensils etc. Any suggestions?
Busy day yesterday...She rode in the car with no hassles and we fitted in a few brisk walks. She is 7.4 Kilo and has to get down to under 5kg. Her weight is problematic as her legs and feet have turned outwards and are short. Sort of Chippendale feet, caused by constant overweight.
Thanks for your involvement and good wishes.

I'm looking for a new one since mine is on its last legs. I've been machine sewing for nigh on 50 years and still need to follow the guide lines on the foot bed if I want a straight line.

This is getting to be a saga. Took Dog to vet who checked her and said nothing that I didn't know ..."she is getting old now" DUH! Looked at red rash spreading that I think is flea allergy, but she just passed it by. She did however suggest a test for Cushings syndrome. I declined for the present...I had already paid $288 for a check with no bloods done and at $444 to test for Cushings...hell, the dog was priced at $500 for sale and even that was daylight robbery. I have been trying to contact the "Boss" to discuss things but I hit a wrong Computer key and lost my letter to her. Mean while Sofe has scratched one side to a raw bloody pulp. Tonight she will have a nice bath and panty-liner dressings and a couple of ml of Phenergan and see what tomorrow brings.

Deary dear Questa - Not the result you were hoping for. Straight away I know what its like to have a "ïtchy" dog. I cant stand the anguish of watching our Patchy scratch furiously at her belly. ears and knawing of feet. The vet told me she has to be on tablets the rest of her life that cost an arm and a leg. He scraped the skin for a sample and said its not the bad skin rash dogs get. I went with the tablets for three months but each time I went to get more he wanted to check her out. OK, fair enough but that cost a fee as well. So, I put her back on an allergy tablet for humans. I have also given her Prednisone lately which stops the itch in its tracks but being Cortisone one has to be careful not to carry on too long.
Oh Questa dear. You are doing all you can and as long as she is comfortable and not scratching she should make a good recovery.

We have a 4 week trial and it is only at the end that we get our papers done and exchange money. It can be delayed if either party wishes. I have heard that with an old 'retiring' dog the organisers allow me to be a foster carer and they pick up the expenses until she dies. I was thinking to save us both vets tests I might come to a deal that if she does have Cushings we can do something like that.

I did it. My flight was at 15 50 - boarding at 15 20 at orly term 3 (ouest and sud don't exist anymore). I exited Orlyval at 15 27 and was in my seat at 15 44, panting. You know it was close when you hear the attendants at the gate saying 'that is him'. 'Now we close the gate.'

I've been the last passenger a few times and it is always total stress. I have actually been driven in a small vehicle across the runway twice to the plane waiting out on the tarmac -- once in Montréal and once in Jeddah. It kind of makes you feel like a VIP but you are not proud of it.
I was severely scolded once by an SAS flight attendant going from Paris to Copenhagen even though I had just received my boarding pass two minutes earlier. It wasn't my fault, but she didn't know that.

MM I got a Singer M1605 from Hobbycraft (think it's a very basic beginner's model) and it was about £90.

My father was a tailor and had his shop cum workshop in the front room of our house on the Main Street of the village. His machine was electric and the speed was controlled by a treadle, the machine had been converted to electric from an old fashioned treadle type. We knew when he was mad because the machine would be going at top speed.

One of my tennants is a sewing machine repair firm. People bring in every type of machine for him to fix or service. I see ancient old Singer machines and the latest factory models being brought to him. I have several old machines on display just for fun.
Cheery - Basic is good. If it can stich straight seams and also zigzag - that's all you need. Whatever you do, (and this is my frustrated opinion) don't let Jeff persuade you to buy an Overlocker. Now that will drive you insane trying to thread it and get the stitching right! I hated my overlocker and was so glad when I sold it (for a loss) but good riddance.

Huge fires in the Var, very clise to Cavalaire. 900 firemen, Canadair planes, helicopters etc at work. Yesterday we were seeing a huge dark orange cloud, today, fortunately the wind almost died. Half a dozen campings have been evacuated. Small villages too. The lady who sold us cheese this morning spent the night helping friends move horses. The house there was destroyed. Yesterday it was 36c, today about 32c...

That is so frightening - I think of all the creatures who could not get away in time. Glad to hear about the horses. If a fire was to break out across the road from our house I think we would soon be on fire. The trees are Pacific Redwoods and a host of other trees - being a farm.
