I have perfected my silent stare that makes people pull up their mask at distances of up to ten metres.

More news...good and not so. Tests for Pixie have all come back...she does not have Cushing's disease. Both vets have said that they don't know what she does have. The next step would be liver biopsy but as she is enjoying life and tests would be invasive and expenses in the thousands of dollars we should just "keep an eye on her". As she is an old girl with a rough life story she is getting the good life now.
About a fortnight ago I had a bit of a fall...squatting and rolled forward and hurt my right thumb as I landed on it with my whole weight. Swollen and a bit sore but no need for a doctor.
Last Sunday I had another fall, walking fast, tripped and flew through the air and hit the concrete and gravel with a crash landing on my same thumb then forehead and face and glasses. Soon had an "egg" on my forehead and blood over face and a very sore thumb. To doctor Monday, Xray shows broken bone at the base which has been pushed into the bone on the 1st. Doc says to line up the pieces (the tip got broken as well) and pin it together. I am dubious... the more I mess with my body the worse things get. I will see Doc in a day or so and accept a splint. Doesn't hurt much and functions OK

Questa! You need to get more deliberate in your movements before you REALLY hurt yourself. And, please, always use handrails on stairs!

Sorry to read about your falls Questa. I hope the splint works for your thumb. It is challenging when you have balance issues to always be mindful of the fact.
My brother-in-law had his thumb in a splint for about 6 weeks (he accidently cut his thumb off while doing some wood working) and they considered putting a pin in after he recovered from it being reattached but decided the bone should mesh back together. So far he has feeling and movement back, they say the bone should fuse back together in the coming months. Then yesterday, his wife fell off their deck and broke one ankle and the other she chipped a bone and sprained it. Needless to say she is in quite a situation for the coming weeks as she can not put weight on either. She has a cast on the broken one and has an appointment with the surgeon next week. She has wonderful neighbours who have brought over prepared meals for the freezer to help keep her off her feet. I am now in charge of pies for Thanksgving dinner on Monday.
So happy to read that your dear Pixie does not have Cushing's disease. I think the longer she is with you she will slowly improve with your loving attention and care to her diet and daily needs, she is in the best place!

Questa, it sounds as though you forget that you have balance/movement issues! I'm sure it's difficult mentally to slow down and accept physical limitations, but falling and getting hurt is even more difficult for day to day life.
The bones in your thumb should heal, but perhaps breaking one at a time would be simpler? The only bone I ever broke was my thumb, tripping over a sidewalk curb and flinging my hand sideways to protect my camera. We left for 3 weeks in S America just afterwards and the thing the doctor gave me was useless and uncomfortable, so my husband made me a little splint that I used for a few weeks. It all healed well, with just a bit of arthritis, which is normal after a break.

Falling is my main concern now, I can get very unsteady so just have to remember to be careful and use all the handrails etc. As I tell everyone, "getting old does you no favours"

So happy for Pixie and her Mistress I am of the opinion that you should let sleeping dogs lye....Pixie is bound to become more healthy as she now has proper care. Of course the old parts are wearing out but as I said in another post, my two maltese=cross lived until 23years of age and the other 25yrs.

You all, pay attentuon !
Handrails are mandatory to use in our company, or at least (covid) you must have your hands right above them both at all rimes.
It saved me frm several falls years ago, when i was young and foolish.
Talking of which, i have no more symptoms of my fall when rollerskating. It never got black, just sore. Nothing ro show, boring 😁

I have started using handrails most of the time, at least when I am going downstairs. I do not rejoice when I see younger people stumbling, though.

Adelaide Intnl Airport has an escalator which takes you up or down 2 floors in one sweep.Standing at the top looking down is creepy. I was carrying too many bits and pieces and lost grip on the handrail. In spite of me yelling ,"Hit the button" and pointing at it as I hung onto the top of the stairs, the bystanders stood around like gormless idiots.
My goods were accumulating at the bottom of the stair while I was being clobbered by each step as it started it's descent.I was sitting sideways across the step thinking that someone will stop the belt and I will get off eventually.
Finally this lad about 12 said to me," Why don't you just let go and ride it to the bottom?"
Embarrassment?..No...Mortification! I collected my gear and fussed around as if this was my normal manner of descent.A few people asked if I was OK. An official turned up when it was all over to advise me on holding on to the railing.
Then I was free to dash outside to have my last cigarette for 7 hours, aware that I would have to do security again and my time was nearly up. Puff, puff, rapid ascent in elevator, nice security lady and onto flight in time.

I was wondering yesterday when I picked up a rental car for the first time in two years if my driving skills had deteriorated. The answer was: yes. First it was a matter of being very hesitant in Paris traffic, but once I got out on country roads and got honked at a few times, it became clear that I was insufficiently attentive. But things got better as the day went on, and I have to admit that today I felt as though I had never stopped driving. I also noticed that I was respecting speed limits better than most drivers, who do not seem to accept that the speed limit on most country roads has been reduced from 90 to 80 and that most city streets recently went from 50 to 30. Not a problem for me, but clearly unbearable to a lot of people.

I have only driven once since selling my car. I drove Mr.Todd's truck just once. He has chauffeured me around for more than a year while I wait to decide what car I want and if it is available at the price I want to pay. I have however renewed my driver's license in the meantime and will be able to drive for the next 5 years. Sometimes I miss my independence and then think I only want to go the the supermarket and hairdresser mostly.

I also noticed that I was respecting speed limits better than most drivers Just came along a motorway from Zagreb with a 130km/h limit. Absolutely chucking it down with rain and standing water, so electronic signs saying limit is 100km/h. Me doing 90 and half the time feeling it's too fast for the conditions, everyone else apart from 10% still doing 130 and above.

That is far too common in France too, even when the signs say to reduce the speed.

Here in Washington State, if you don't drive at least 4-5 mph over the limit you will cause a traffic blockage and create a hazard. In Tuscany, if you don't drive at least 15-20 km/h over the limit outside of town, the same thing happens. Of course all the locals know where the working Autovelox machines are and which are dummies too and I generally don't.

I occasionally tune into "Worlds craziest car crashes "or similar" but this afternoon Mr.Tod and grandson watched the best crashes on Rally car TV. Besides the drivers being absolute maniacs I think the by-standers are even more crazy..... those cars were flying everywhere!

I got a cell phone calls from a number I did not recognise but answered it anyway. It was the opposition party phoning to find out if I would vote for them. Thankfully it was my choice of polictical parties and when I delivered my answer of "YES, Absolutely" the telephonist fell off her chair with happiness! I feel good.

On bus line 60 which I use several times a week, we pass through the ultra orthodox Lubavitch area, and generally a number of the faithful board the bus (not on Saturdays of course). No women, since they should stay at home. I am always amazed at how much they look like Taliban with their bushy unkempt beards and their hostile eyes. It's amazing how two factions can hate each other so much and yet look identical.

I didn't find a cou try or group of in Europe where Finland would be. Whatagain, you don't have to post it in a subboard -- you can make a thread in the Europe board: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/board/19/europeThat's where any place (such as Iceland) which doesn't fit neatly into one of the subboards would be. Generally a new subboard is only created when there are enough threads to warrant it.

Been working out the details of going to Spain next summer again with the car from Sarajevo. It's 2900km door to door by road or 1500km if I take a ferry from Croatia to Italy and then another one from Italy to Spain. The time the journey takes is about the same and I've worked out the cost is about the same as well. So it'll probably be one way with the ferries and the other way just by road. Which way round though remains to be seen.

The long term trend for petrol prices might be worth taking into consideration. Will they be going up or going down next summer? Who knows?
