I was surprised that Russia actually imported vodka. I thought it was one of the few things they produced, other than oil and gas.

We have a new cleaning lady ! Seems nobody cleans in the neighbourhood so they are difficult to find... Took us 3 months. She comes from Brazil, speaks Portuguese (we don't... save obrigado) and some broken English. But it was clean.

Does she live out and come to work at a certain time on a certain day? There are very few maids living 'in house' which we call a "Sleep In Maid", these days. Most want to go home to the family in the late afternoon. I cherish my housemaid so much these days as she only comes on a Thursday from 7.30 until 1pm. My rooms always look so neat and clean when she has been. She is not young but still full of energy. I make sure she goes home with not only her wages but I like to load her up with meat and vegetables, some household goods like a cooking pot, on occasions she likes to go through my wardrobe and picks out an item of clothing that I cant fit into but she can!

The cleaning lady comes 5 hours a day. But that one came twice and then quit, as she leaves for Portugal... looking for a new one.

With such an incredibly high voter turnout already, not necessarily.

I just heard on the news that the 5% who voted for the 3rd candidate, a nationalist conservative, are much more likely to give their votes to Erdogan. And he doesn't need much to get over 50%. Unfortunately.

Si now, there is a scandal in the US because a teacher played a Disney that had a lgbt character ?
Yet it didn't even happen in Salem, but i guess GOP would want her to be burned alive... and all Disney movies censored, to the pleasure of De Santis...

Maybe we should have a thread called 'education'. So i was having a discussion with my daughter, a heavy one, and after some tume i said 'well at least we can agree on the fact that we disagree' Upon which she answered 'ah... you make progress, you listen to me'. I guess i should have left it at that. However i retorted 'well, you better not forget you are the result of a spermatozoid that could have easily been swallowed.' Maybe i had better kept my mouth shut. For once. Maybe. 😇😇😇😇 Waddyathink?

Probably inappropriate with one's children, although I have often heard in France the expression when talking to one's offspring about something that happened in the past "you were still in your father' testicles when that happened."

In our cemetary lie since more than 80 years 3 young Brits who came to Belgium and got killed a few miles from where so many other Brits died in 1815. I often go past these 3 braves.

In a lot of French cemeteries too, there are often just a handful of British military graves but always perfectly tended. I suppose there are special employees who go round to take care of these places when they are not in official British military cemetaries.

My Great Uncle Ernest Battle was gassed at the 2nd battle of Ypres. My sister found his grave via the war graves commission and several family members have been to visit the site. All have remarked on the meticulous care taken of the cemetry. It feels like a sort of pilgrimage, Ernest was a runner and received a field promotion to sargeant.

I just saw this CNN article about compulsory hijabs: www.cnn.com/2023/05/22/opinions/iran-button-protest-couple-nasrin-sotoudeh-reza-khandan-kaufman/index.htmlI haven’t read the article, but the link title is what caught my eye: "Compulsory hijab ensnares both sexes: Iranian couple speak out." Coincidentally, I stopped briefly on a Paris street yesterday to take a photo. A woman was behind me, in front of a shop, talking on her cell phone. A man briefly approached her and said something. Both people were about 30 - 40 years in age, and nicely dressed. I’m guessing they were not together and didn’t know one another. Apparently she either didn’t hear what he said or didn’t understand. It’s possible he first spoke in another language. He very quietly repeated himself in English and said: ”Your hair is exposed in the back and is coming out from under your hijab." He then proceeded down the sidewalk. She looked shocked, ducked deeper into the shadow of the shop doorway, while he went on his way. I have no idea if his comment was seen as a rebuke, a warning, or as a kindness.

I was in Iran with a group on our way to Nepal. Three girls decided they wouldn't wear a scarf over their head. I was detained for a while because I, being male, was responsible for them.

May I lighten the mood...? (Sorry Mick, look away now). I was laughing at the post from Patricklondon with my two recently returned from Dubai, Grandsons. When they learned what it was about My eldest Grandson strolled out of the room with a sly smirk saying "I know what's that like because I sprayed my B...S with deodorant to make them smell nice and it stung like heck!" Needless to say a grandmother does not ask why must "they" smell nice?? For heavens sake he is only 14!
