In late January we'll be going to Paris, flying to Athens for a couple of nights. Then we fly to Chania. Finally down to the southernmost bit of Europe - Paleochora - for five weeks.
Any input from people?

Can you imagine that my only experience of Greece dates from when my Lufthansa flight touched down at Athens airport for one hour on a flight from Frankfurt to Karachi? And all I saw out of the airplane window was the tarmac.

A friend came back from Santorini late last Winter raving about it. I like your odds of enjoying yourself.

Askar, many thanks for that. We have taken an apartment in Haris Studios which I think must be where your photos show. Any knowledge of the place?

Baz, just get out your magnifying glass. It is the flat with the terrace where you can see the bottle of retsina awaiting you.

Enjoy the retsina, Baz.
No advice for Greece, it's been too long.

Askar, many thanks for that. We have taken an apartment in Haris Studios which I think must be where your photos show. Any knowledge of the place? The last building on the left on the first photo is the On The Rocks hotel. Haris Studios is about 50 m further. I stayed at Klimas studios just behind. Haris Studios seems very nice. I think you've made a very good choice. I went in Crete for the first time in 2007 just to give it a try and since then I am hooked. I have returned 3 times and I can't wait to go back.

I hope Haris studios will be a good home. Obviously they don't get many visitors in winter. Our deal is for a small apartment of bedroom, sitting room, kitchenette and bathroom with heating and hot water - 350 euros a month. Haris, a Cretan, is maried to Flora, a Scot. She is the person I have been dealing with and she sounds welcoming and fun.

In view of the ongoing Greek situation is it time to dust down this thread?

A very sad situation, the ordinary people of Greece sacrificed on the altar of EU ambition

I volunteer to check out the Greece situation from the point of view of a tourist with barely an iota of a clue, and who was never even in the Greek system in college.
I'm visiting Hannah in London a few days before and after her spring break in February, and it turns out to be cheaper to fly both of us return to Athens by EasyJet and put up in modest Greek pensions than to spend eight nights in my modest Bloomsbury hotel bathroom-down-the-stairs single. (Luckily my favorite though and just a block from her dorm.) I was nudging towards Malta, Nice, or Avignon. She's always wanted to go to Greece. So, we plan 5 nights in Athens and 3 in Nafplio.
I am hoping for low excitement, minimal demonstrations, preferably no changes in the currency. I'll buy trip insurance this time.
Suggestions, comments?

London coming up, then Hannah and I head to Greece this weekend, 4 nights in Nafplio then 4 in Athens. Will have my phone for low-expectation photos. I have a few Pimsleur-assisted basic phrases, and a few ideas for day trips to Nemea, Mycenae, Epidaurus. Never got around to more than a wikipedia refresher on the House of Atreus.
I hear the EU is threatening to lock their borders more tightly if Greece doesn't do a better job of repelling refugees. But look at that shoreline.

I am in Rhodes. The sky is cloudless, the sea is blue, the food and service excellent.
What's not to like?

Well done. Have a good time. Breakfast for me in Greece was always yoghurt and honey. Any photos of the Colossus straddling the harbour entrance would be appreciated. It is still there, isn't it?

Ah, As I hadn't eaten since yesterday lunchtime ( the flight was delayed and we got here at 1 in the morning) I went for all the unhealthy stuff, sausages, bacon etc finished with Greek pastry and a honey cake. Mrs Cactus was far mor virtuous and had a little cheese and croissant.
I shall try harder tomorrow
The Colossus must be just the other side of the island. I'll find it next week. At the moment I am touring the bars and restaurants. There's culture for you

Mrs Cactus is feeling a tad off colour so I am sat at the pool bar on my own. Quite happy with my own company anyway.
Very interesting though. I only looked at Tripadvisor reviews a couple of days before I left and 4 out of 5 were good. The whingers (serial whingers I suspect) mostly complained about the food. Too samey, not hot enough etc. All I can say is that this is some of the best, most varied food I have had in years. If I had read Tripadvisor before I booked it might well have put me off.

Are you at an all-inclusive Mick?
I read many many reviews on the resort we were going to in Cuba last year. We did not pick the resort, the bride and groom did, most of the reviews were good but so many complained about the food that I was not expecting much, happily my standards must be on the average variety, I thought the food was quite good. The only thing I did not enjoy was standing in line-ups but did enjoy that I was not cooking for a week!
Hope you and your wife have a wonderful holiday!

Thank you Mich. Yes all inclusive, a first for us after years of self catering in Spain.
So far, so good....

Sat on the balcony with a cup of tea just gazing at the very blue Med. Not a sound around us and baking hot. Lovely.
