As of this weekend, Spain will become the European leader for high speed trains with the inauguration of the Madrid-Valencia AVE line. This will give Spain 2056 km of high speed lines, compared to 1896 for the French TGV. Madrid-Valencia will only take 90 minutes henceforth, instead of 4 hours, to cover the 438 km distance.

It's supposed to be good for the economy.

Hope so. I'm very fond of Spain but holidays there are pretty pricey now.

I also found holidays there getting more an more expensive. We decided that as we'd continue to go the best option is to buy our own house. For some reason though, economically, I'm trying to avoid the thought that for the same price we could have had two weeks a year in a decent hotel there each year until 2135.

If I had the dosh I might do the same but a local advised me to rent for a year before buying. Seemed good advice.

It is good advice especially to get an idea if the area is suitable. We'd been back to the same area time and time again before we committed ourselves.
