Today is the last day for bullfighting in Barcelona and the rest of Catalonia. It was already forbidden in the Canary Islands in 1991. Perhaps lovers of bullfighting could create a human version to replace it. Participants could be selected by lottery among the spectators.  |

They should do it like the Portuguese. The bull isn't killed and I think it's hurt less too.

K2, Interesting to know that bullfighting has been outlawed in Barcelona but that it's listed as part of France's cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture.
Nycgirl, thanks for mentioning my blog post. It was an eye opening experience. There's a link at the bottom of the post for anyone who wants to sign an anti-bullfighting petition.
Hwinpp, I think that they still kill the bull in Portugal but that they don't do it in the arena. At least that was my understanding from talking with some bullfighting aficionados.

In southwestern France, there is the course landaise, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Course_landaise, in which they use cows and the animals are not killed. I actually went to a bullfight for the first time in my life 2 years ago in Ecuador. I had always thought it would be too bloody and awful, and in fact, it was in a small arena in downtown Quito. The bulls were indeed killed but it just didn't seem as bad as I had expected. One of the toreros lost his shoes. One was injured in the arm. And I think I just read that they have stopped the bulls being killed in Ecuador since then.  |

It's a very different sport in Portugal, more like the old Cretan version, with the 'fighters' jumping over and vaulting on top of the bull. The point is that the bull's death is not a spectacle and it's certainly not the celebrated highlight in the arena. If it gets taken to the slaughterhouse after the bullfight that's ok with me. |

If it gets taken to the slaughterhouse after the bullfight that's ok with me. We saw quite a few meat trucks outside of the arena in Nimes and many of the restaurants were offering traditional "bull" dishes. It was surprisingly tender - there's a local dish where it's cooked with berries, etc. |
