I agree. Eliminating the green lets you focus on the wood.

I wanted to make sure that Black and White photography fans saw bixa's post in Highlighting Today about Alfred Eisenstaedt, December 6, 1898 -- August 23, 1995. It has a couple good links to photo galleries that host his images and some background info about him.
In quoting the post into this thread, however, I ran afoul of the imagebank guidelines, because there was an Eisenstaedt photo in it. My bad. You just have to go to the original post and follow the links bixa put there.

kimby,
You might try combining/blending some jpgs in a HDR editor to get rid of the overexposed area in the first picture. I've done this before and it works really well. Just use the original jpg file...overexpose one file save it, underexpose another file, save...and the use the original file. Combine the three files and play with the HDR setting until you get an image that you like.

Here is another of my B&W pics taken in 1952. This is the signalling station of the Suez Canal Co on Kabrit Point, which seperates the Great and Bitter Lakes on the Suez Canal.

I don't think I've ever visited this thread. Shame on me. Some real gems in here. Bixa, that last shot is classic. I remember when I was in Oaxaca this time of year for the Days of the Dead, I shot quite a few rolls of black and white and they were incredible, particularly some of the night time shots. (I have to try and remember where they are somewhere in this house.... )

Great shot! I love the eye makeup on the girls. It reminds me of Black Swan.

Here is a lane I wandered when I was young And the hills It was along this hill where we would line ourselves up with the barrels of one of the 12inch guns, which the army fired from the railway. They were firing ranging shots, the idea being to fire into the German invasion barges if they attempted to come across. By being in line when the gun fired, we would hear the shell go "whoosh, whoosh, whoosh" over us

Beautiful! I especially love the quiet lonesomeness of the first photo.

Yes, what NYCGirl said! That first one has the feel of an etching and the second is a brilliant landscape shot.

Since that looks like what I saw in Macau, my first guess is that the photo is from Portugal.

Love the photo, Kerouac. Did you also look at the art?

I don't need to look at the art. Since I am officially unemployed, I can walk into any of these museums free of charge by just showing my papers. I don't even have to go to the ticket office.
Anyway, I'm sure you know that it is strictly forbidden to take photos anywhere inside the Orsay except a very few rare vantage points like this one.

Rikita's photo is wonderful -- the man in the frame looks as though he is tiptoeing away from the woman.
