(Written as it was happening.)
Casa Rosa, Centro Histórico, Morelia Mexico: 3:00 a.m.
I was lying awake, turning over in bed, when I heard some people enter the Casa Rosa compound. I figured it was just some people getting home from a night on the town.
SUPRISE!!!! Suddenly, right across from our bedroom window, a small group of mariachis launched into "Las Mañanitas"; trumpet, bass, guitar and violin. I was waking up anyway and might as well enjoy it.
It's a small, not very polished group playing, but apparently, they all are having a good time. (They DO need to get a new end of line lick, though. :-)
They are still singing, and yes; they do punctuate their singing with those shrill little whoops, just like in the movies Hey! They just did it again: ¡Jey! ¡JiiiiiiiiiY! ¡Juy juy juy! (Or something to that effect.)
(There's that end lick again.) There may be a way to record this from the Mac... I tried, but the mic is to far away from the players. If I had my camera...But I don't.
The Tequila may be freely flowing, as the singing is becoming less coherent and the playing is deteriorating. I wonder if they'll eat menudo when they finish.
That's all for now, here in Morelia Mariachiville.

Too wonderful, Don Cuevas -- it's just like being there! I've been there too often, jolted awake by loving families blasting out Las Mañanitas on a boom box for Mamá, who after all has to get up that early to make the tamales for her own birthday party. More vignettes as they happen, please. This is obviously your don, DonC.

Enthusiasm often trumps musical skill anyway. Sounds like a magical moment.
