Really? That's interesting. Was that because of immigrants from India over the years preceding the war?

I learned the term orthorexia today. It is not yet officially classified as an eating disorder but it concerns people who are so obsessed with healthy eating that they become unable to eat anything else, sometimes at a major risk to their health when they can't find 100% "appropriate" food.

I've just learnt that from you now. It is of interest because we have a friend who we don't invite round for meals any more. They developed over the years from being just what we called a 'picky' eater to becoming obsessive. Now we can probably put a name to it. I've just looked into it a little and it's quite interesting as it is just another example of how extreme humans can be even to the point of malnutrition, but continuing. The originator of the term, an American physician said these are people, "solely concerned with the quality of the food they put in their bodies, refining and restricting their diets according to their personal understanding of which foods are truly 'pure'."
As an aside he was scathing about veganism - "an invention of people who lived in Western countries and had too much time on their hands". Veganism was illogical as "animals all over the earth devote themselves to eating each other" and following a vegan diet could thus make a person miserable as it was "an arrogant violation of natural law".

I know a woman who has been on a keto diet for years & claims it's just wonderful, so good for her. Of course I know this because she thinks it's interesting enough to mention over and over and over again. But another woman I know who is genuinely gluten intolerant, i.e., following a diet stricture she did not impose on herself, doesn't feel the need to discuss her food habits with others.

Prosélytism were it about religion or veganism or whatever is the top of boredom.
And these people feel so much supérior I can only nod and think of something else while they talk.
No need to make conversation, they do it for all.

Sonny and Cher were originally called Caesar and Cleo.

Well, that's a new factoid for me!
I just looked up their real names: Salvatore Phillip "Sonny" Bono and Cherilyn Sarkisian.
Sonny was his nickname since childhood & it would seem that Cher is the logical nickname for Cherilyn. Who knows how they came up with Caesar, although Bono later named one of his children Chesare.

I imagine that at some time in early days, somebody must have pointed out that Cher has more than a passing resemblance to standard representations of Cleopatra.

Good point.
Until she started messing with her face, she was about as beautiful as a person can be.

The inuits have a farting God, called Matshishkapeu. Each time you fart, it is actually that powerful God who speaks through you. Something I will tell my wife when, err, if, err... Well never then.

Well I'm happy to say that we honour Matshishkapeu in this house. I just told our son (Russ has crohns) he said 'I am a vessel! Nay a prophet'

I saw a news report today saying that huge numbers of French people are going to Belgium for rapid appointments with an ophthalmologist. And yes, it is fully covered by the usual French procedures (sécurité sociale and mutual insurance).

23% of people with tattoos would like to have them removed. (I would have thought more than that.)

That is what I said. And I got one at 58 - see blablah around end of feb I posted a pic.
Life can follow very sinuous paths. And our mind is hostage to the ways life chooses for us. All we can do is try not to trip during the journey.

Tattoos. I got one for my 50th birthday...pink lotus flower on left ankle. Never regretted it and plan to get another soon...a SE Asian dragon. This will be to mark my 80th. When I had the first it was a rare sight to see a female "inked". No-one thinks anything about it now.

I've got something planned for my 80th in November but it most certainly won't be a tattoo. I am always curious when I see one or more tatoos on the back of someones leg, neck, or arm. This to me signals that the art is not for them in the least but purely for everyone else to admire or dislike.

In fairness, things like a beautifully arranged chignon can only be admired by others. Even clothing can't be admired by the wearer unless that person is in front of a mirror.

I don't take much notice of politics BUT I did sit up when I saw tht we only have 7 million registered personal Tax Payers(many of whom are immigrating) BUT 20 million Grant Recipients. That's 20 million people holding out their hands for help from us the taxpayer, who are struggling with huge rates of taxation. It should be the other way around.
