It's crazy how much has changed. I didn't grow up here, but as a kid watching 80s movies like Coming to America and Crocodile Dundee, I thought New York looked so gritty and dangerous. It's definitely not at all like that now. I was recently lamenting the lack of graphic street art in the city, but that hideous tagging is not what I had in mind.  |

I was in New York 3 years ago and thought what a very pleasant city it was. Nothing like I imagined it at all.

Yes, I think the imagery of the 80's and the reputation from back then will stick in our minds for a long time. Even now, when the French want to use shorthand to describe a dangerous criminal situation, they say "C'est Chicago!" -- and that dates back to the 1920's.

I took the subway in New York City in the 1970s. It felt a rather scary (compared to Toronto) and there was a cop in every wagon. But I don't think there was so much graffiti.
